Fact of the Day: bowdlerize
British medical doctor, Thomas Bowdler, gave up his practice in 1754 and undertook the “cleansing” of Shakespeare’s works – removing all words and expressions he considered to be indecent. In 1818, he published his edition of Shakespeare’s works intended for “families.” His name became synonymous with self-righteous expurgation and the word bowdlerize has become familiar in the English language.
