I don’t know what it is about the Lord of the Rings movies, but I really can’t watch just one of them without setting myself up for a ginormous marathon to watch all three of them together!
Well, at least not all in a row – the extended editions are something like 4-5 hours a piece…
But it’s certainly manageable over the course of a few days, which is exactly what I just finished doing tonight after first catching The Fellowship of the Ring on TV earlier this week. For the most part, they’re good background movies to watch while I’m writing because I’ve seen them all so many times, although admittedly I guess I normally watch them on TNT or whoever is airing them at the time because I did catch myself doing a lot more watching than writing on the second and third movies, which I ended up watching via the Extended Edition DVDs.
It was a nice remind of just how good those movies are – I have my favorite scenes from each of them … the original forming of the fellowship in the first movie; pretty much the entire battle at Helm’s Deep in the second movie; and a bunch in the third – when Aragorn reclaims the sword of Elendil, later when he along with Legolas, Gimli, and the undead show up at the Battle of Pelennor Fields, and my personal favorite of the 15 endings … when Aragorn as king bows to the hobbits at his own coronation ceremony.
Good stuff!
Anyways, I’ve been thinking that I want to eventually start reading more again, and maybe this series would be a good one to start with, seeing as the last time I actually went through the books was probably back in grade school, and early grade school at that! I’ve been looking for an excuse to pick up a Kindle, so I think that may be my goal to pick one up by Christmastime to give me something to do in hopefully the bit of downtime that I’m working so hard to earn!
