Last night we went to see G.I. Joe: Retaliation. It was pretty terrible, but it’s not like I went into it with very high expectations after the first one, anyways. I did feel a little gypped that at least we got 90 minutes of watching The Baroness run around in black leather in Rise of the Cobra, so I ended up watching that one back at home after the wife went to bed just to make up for 90 minutes of The Rock pretending to be an actor.
Anyways, it got me thinking about what else is coming up in the theaters this year, so I thought I’d share a quick list of the movies that I’m looking forward to seeing thus far…
Oblivion (April) – I’m kind of a fan of apocalypse-type movies and I still enjoy Tom Cruise despite him being absolutely bat-shit crazy, so this one intrigues me.
Olympus Has Fallen (April) – …as does this, despite there being a surprising number of The US Government Has Fallen-type movies on the docket this year.
Iron Man 3 (May) – Duh.
Star Trek: Into Darkness (May) – I keep thinking that maybe it’s time that I went back and watched all of the old Star Trek movies because I was never really into it, but I’m curious if I might actually enjoy it. The last newer movie was decent, so who knows?
Fast & Furious 6 (May) – Just kidding. I stopped seeing these things after #2 because that’s roughly what the series means to me…
Man of Steel (June) – I’ve never really been into Superman, but the trailer intrigues me.
This is the End (June) – Let’s be honest … this is probably gonna be terrible, but I’m going to see it anyways because it features every modern comedy star that I’ve liked in the last 10 years…
Despicable Me 2 (July) – I haven’t actually seen the original Despicable Me yet, despite loving all of the trailers when it came out. It looks like it might be a lot of fun … I need to rent that before July comes around…
The Wolverine (July) – Coming out this year feels really random for this movie, like 20th Century Fox has to put out a superhero flick because of everything that Disney’s doing now. When’s the next X-Men movie supposed to come out???
Thor: The Dark World (November) – Whoa – big jump from July to November! I’m nearly as excited about this one as I am Iron Man 3 simply because I have no idea what the storyline could be for a 2nd Thor movie … might be kinda why they chose it to go this year with Iron Man instead of Captain America, who definitely had the better 1st movie of the two.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (November) – I never got around to reading the books when the first one came out last year, but I’m curious to see how this one picks up where the other left off and if it can be half as successful as its blockbuster predecessor.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (December) – What can I say? If I had to pick but one movie to see this year, it would be The Hobbit, Part 2 (sorry, Mr. Stark). REALLY excited to see what they do with Smaug in CGI … why haven’t we seen a trailer for this yet?!
Wow – the list is actually a little bigger than I would’ve thought! Granted, there will also be a few token movies tossed in there that I know I’ll be seeing, not by my own choice, but more so as leverage to ensure that my wife has to come see the ones that I want to see!
(*ahem* Monsters University, Smurfs 2…)
Overall not a bad haul for 2013, though – let’s hope at least one or two end up living up to their actual trailers! 😛
