A toll is a toll, and a roll is a roll…

Electronic tolls are kind of a touchy subject for me here in Florida.

On one hand, I think it’s kind of cool that many of our toll roads have now gone entirely electronic, meaning that to pay the toll you simply have to keep a transponder in your car that automatically deducts the required amount as you pass through each plaza.

On the other hand, though, I still haven’t bought one yet, and so instead it leaves me in this awkward scenario where I don’t tend to carry rolls of quarters in my car, and occasionally I end up having to do something like this…

Yep – that’s a check for seventy-five cents to cover one of the tolls coming back from Legoland yesterday. It will cost me half again as much to mail the damn thing as the toll itself! I wish I could pay the thing online, or even better, with my credit card at the toll plaza, but I always find myself wondering what out of state people do when they’re driving around Florida and wander onto a toll road without any means to actually pay when they want to get back off…  😕

Maybe it’s time to finally splurge for SunPass after all!

visions of an ad-free Penny Arcade???

So yesterday the guys at Penny Arcade made a bold proclamation that I think is kind of interesting…

http://penny-arcade.com/2012/07/09/penny-arcade-sells-out

Essentially, they’re experimenting with the idea of replacing the advertising segment of their business with a crowd-sourced segment, ironic because that’s actually how the comic got one of its first big breaks early on – the guys were ready to quit because they were broke, decided to put up a donation box as a last-ditch attempt, and ended up raising $10,000 overnight from their fans! So it’s interesting to see here a decade or whatever later them drifting back to give that model another shot, granted now a considerably bigger entity than they were before.

Their goal is to raise enough money to remove advertising from penny-arcade.com for 2013 – an ambitious goal which they’ve priced out at a cool $1,000,000. Of course, this isn’t their entire budget, as they still make money from PAX, merchandise, sales of their video game, and so forth … a million dollars sounds like a lot of money until you start shilling it out for office space and salaries and health insurance for a dozen employees. And true to Internet form, they’ve already got their share of haters, citing that they’re already successful enough and that somehow this new business idea is a slap in the face of their fans who … blah blah blah – the arguments are pretty stupid and ring of bitter folks who either don’t even read the strip or don’t care enough if the business is around tomorrow anyways, so whatever…

I think it’s an interesting proposal because oddly enough, PA is one of the few sites that I actually don’t mind the advertising on because they’ve always done a really good job of only accepting ads from games and companies that they can legitimately get behind, and they also adamantly refuse obnoxious ads that want to talk back to you and auto-play video and all of that. Still, I also get their point that to some extent these advertisers still control the site and end up taking up parts of their time that they could be devoting to other free projects, so the idea of cutting traditional advertising completely out of the loop to give them an even more unfiltered approach to their fans is kinda cool. I mean, I’ve absolutely loved a lot of the PA Presents projects over the years, but who’s to say what else they could come up with if advertising isn’t as much of a priority.

Overall I think it should be interesting to see how it all works out. On one hand, there are already a lot of questions because the “rewards” are somewhat more symbolic than the loads of swag that people are used to getting and the goals are pretty subjective, and yet still at the time of writing this they’ve already managed to raise $100,000 in the first day it was online! I haven’t really decided if I want to contribute or not – I’m fine with the site continuing on as it is, but perhaps in the upcoming weeks when we start to get a little more info about some of the alternative projects that they’re entertaining…

As for now, at least you can’t say that the promo video isn’t hilarious!

a place for all of my minifigs, and all of my minifigs in their place…

One of the treasures that I picked up from Legoland today was a new means of organizing my ever-expanding collection of Lego minifigs!

I actually came up with this idea a month or two ago, but kept forgetting to pick up base plates whenever we walk through the Lego store over at Downtown Disney. It’s really super simple – I basically just hooked the bases that the minis come on into the base plate vertically, with the intent then of either hanging or resting the base board itself vertically so that the minifigs all line up nice and neat on little shelves like so…

Talk about a better solution than just having piles upon piles of minifigs thrown all over my desk, anyways! I’ve actually been collecting these now since series 3 (currently on 7), and even only having about half of them, as you can see I’ve almost got enough to start a second board already … I probably would’ve, but have been plagued with tons of duplicates, lately… 🙁

I did have to make one slight modification for two of the minifigs – the Indian chief and Godzilla, specifically … both were just a bit too “deep” due to their head dress/tail, so I wasn’t able to fit them on using the normal black bases that come with them. Instead, I substituted a pair of black 2×3 plates for each fig, which then gave me an extra set of pegs so that I could move them slightly forward – if you squint real close, you can see that those two are actually standing on the edge, whereas the others are all square in the middle.

Anyways, I was really pleased with the result, and I even have an extra board already because I honestly thought that they’d take up a lot more room than this! Originally I had considered maybe trying to frame and/or hang them on the wall, but for now I’ve just got the final result propped up on my desk taking up a fraction of the space that they used to and instead being a lot more presentable to boot!

Now if anybody wants to trade to help me get rid of some dups…  😕

Legoland Preview!

So anyone who follows me on Twitter already knows that today I went to Legoland Florida!

It was pretty great, and I’ve got a ton of pictures to prove it.

323 pictures, to be exact.

Needless to say, it’s probably going to take me a few days to go through all of them and upload the best ones to Flickr, and I also want to take some time to write a little about our experience, too, because there were some things that Legoland did great and there were some things that frankly were utterly ridiculous! All of that will come in good time (this weekend?), but until then here are a handful of my favorite shots – pretty much all from around Miniland because (spoiler) it was by far my favorite area of the entire park…

135 Rockets’ Red Glare…

Now consider yourself warned that the audio is extremely out of whack with this video, so be prepared to start low and go even lower before you’re done, but it’s a pretty incredible spectacle nonetheless – footage from all 135 space shuttle liftoffs synced up to launch simultaneously – now that’s a proper fireworks show for the 4th of July!!!

The Amazing Spider-Man was … pretty freaking amazing!

I honestly didn’t think that I was going to like this one … but in hindsight, I ended up being really, really wrong…  🙄

The thing is, I’ve always been a really big fan of Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man and have often regaled that it was pretty much my favorite series of superhero movies to date … well, before  Iron Man and The Avengers came along, anyways. The movies were exciting, each did a great job of building upon the last, and I don’t think that I could name a single role that I would’ve preferred to recast.

Ok, so Topher Grace as Venom in the third one was a little weird – I’ll give you that!

My point is, I really liked the last series of Spider-Man movies, and which was why I wasn’t exactly crazy about this latest reboot because I just felt like the studio was abandoning such a great track record simply for the sake of starting over again … I mean, seriously – how many different times to we have to tell the damn origin story instead of continuing to dig deeper into the world of Spider-Man actually being a superhero?!

There’s only so many different ways you can show a guy getting bit by a radioactive spider!!!

And all of that said makes it especially weird for me to admit after watching the new movie last night that I actually really enjoyed it … because frankly, I’m not sure that I know how to like two versions of the same universe at the same time…  😯

I already paid you!!!

A pet peeve of mine with Tampa Electric / People’s Gas – our current utility providers … why can’t their billing system check and verify whether we’ve already paid before sending out their friendly reminders like this???

Dear Valued Customer,

This is a friendly payment reminder from Tampa Electric that your electric bill due date is approaching.

If you have already made your payment or have scheduled your payment online, please disregard this notice.

If you would like to make a payment at this time please click on the following link: http://tec.inetbiller.com

Regards,

Tampa Electric

It was one thing with paper bills when they could easily cross in the mail, but with everything electronic these days, there’s no excuse other than a poorly designed billing system to pester your good customers who actually pay their bills well in advance.  😕

Cleo’s Fish

It’s kind of weird – Cleo has taken a real interest in my fish as of late, like she just finally noticed that there are living, breathing creatures just like her swimming around in there! She seems to be particularly interested in the algae eater, though I’m pretty sure that he can’t hear her barking back at him from behind the glass and water…  😛

…now as long as we can keep her from jumping up on the glass and tipping the whole 40 gallons over…

Def Leppard “Forges” Its Own Music

I thought this was a sort of intriguing story that I came across very much at random today…

Def Leppard Recording ‘Forgeries’ of Old Hits to Spite Label
http://www.billboard.com/news/def-leppard-recording-forgeries-of-old-hits-1007484752.story

Essentially what happened is that the band had a major beef with their label about fair royalties for digital downloads – not an uncommon problem today, as many different creative genres are still operating on contracts written decades ago that are vague enough to really screw artists via future technology. But the reason this group’s situation is different is that they somehow retained the ability to say yay or nay for any future business opportunities, so instead of letting the label sell their entire collection and keep most of the profits, the group said, “Nope!” and is now re-recording the songs themselves to be released independently.

It’s sad to me that these huge media conglomerates simply have no desire to actually support the very creators that made them millions, but I suppose there’s a little comfort to be found in watching IP slowly chipped away from their base like this as creators come to realize that these days there are other options than just signing over 90% of your profits to a huge corporation who’ll only be in your corner when there’s money to be made. They don’t care about negotiating or taking a pay cut to ensure that the art continues – it’s an all-or-nothing mentality that worked well for them over the last 50 years and it’s slowly going to put them in the grave over the next 50.

would be curious to compare a few of the re-recorded tracks to their counterparts from 25 years ago – what are the chances that Pour Some Sugar On Me still rocks by a bunch of guys in their 50s as it did when they were in their late 20s???
