Am I using Twitter wrong?

Sometimes I wonder if I’m using Twitter right, or rather, if my current number of followers is limited by the way that I use Twitter.

Basically, I typically don’t follow people back when they follow me, and I know that this is sometimes a big issue for people when they follow someone and don’t get followed in return. My reasoning for this is two-fold: frankly, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, but I don’t necessarily care what every Tom, Dick, and Nancy who follow me tweets on a day-to-day basis, and even if I did, there’s no way in hell that I would be able to keep up with them all anyways.

It kinda baffles me when I see someone who either follows a zillion people or is complaining about people not following them back because I don’t understand how they could manage keeping up with 30,000 people or even millions like some of the bigger celebs. My best guess is that they treat Twitter as a stream that they dip into from time to time, whereas for the relatively few people who I do follow, I actually like to read just about everything that they tweet. That’s why I follow them.

As a result, unfortunately, I have to wonder if my follower count stays roughly the same because people follow based on a single tweet that they see and when they don’t get a reciprical follow a week later, they unfollow me. Then again, this could be more of a bot issue and the actual people just unfollow me because they don’t like my content, but still, it’d be interesting to know where the problem actually lies. As of probably the last six months, my followers float right around 110 people – right now it’s up to 123, but my assumption is that it’ll drop back down eventually.

I guess realistically I shouldn’t care how big the number is, but it’s an ego thing, really … plus, more followers hopefully translates into more people reading my columns, too, which is good for business. I think ultimately I’m just looking for validation on my use of the service because in my mind, I’m using it in the same way a lot of the people I follow myself use it (i.e. fan service for writers, artists, etc…). I don’t necessarily expect some of them to follow me back for the exact same reasons I listed above, and there’s always the option with Twitter to keep up on @replies so that you can still interact with people who specifically address you or comment on one of your tweets – I’ve done this from time to time myself when someone comments on a funny thing that I’ve recently tweeted.

Maybe I’m just musing about nothing. I think I need to get back to work!

Building the next great hero…

So this week I had to create a new character for D&D, which was a bit of a challenge for me because unlike some other members of the group who tend to experiment and probably have half a dozen different heroes in their binders, personally I end up creating one and then running it as long as humanly possible until I simply have no choice but to start over again. And honestly, the only reason I even do that is simply because of the nature of our campaign – right now we’re not running a lot of high level modules to accommodate the newer players, so my two older characters simply can’t run in those level ranges anymore.

Anyways, the two characters that I have right now are a Level 6 Elven Ranger and a Level 4 Dragonborn Fighter. Both were created out of different motives – the ranger was my first with this group and was simply because I had never really played one back when I played in middle school because rangers were another guy’s schtick, and the fighter was born out of necessity because I was getting frustrated with not having a worthwhile defender to have my character’s back when I played my ranger.

Admittedly it was kinda tough choosing character #3 because it’s really important for me to also know the personality behind the character and not just focusing on stats to create the most effective character for a given role. Plus, it helps me in-game to play better because if I craft a persona for the character from the ground up, it just seems to flow better than building this awesome, super-high damage striker and then trying to fill in the backstory after the fact. This time, though, nothing was really jumping out at me, so I put together a list of the different classes and races that appealed to me:

  • Eladrin Swordmage – a noble and honorable knight-like hero, although this would’ve been another defender and I just finished playing one
  • Human Assassin – basically a character based on Shadow, from Final Fantasy 3
  • Druid – I dunno … just really offbase from what I would normally play
  • Sorceror / Wizard – I love the possibilities and played one way back in the day … between Gandalf and Jim Darkmagic, wizards are just cool!

I ended up just throwing together the assassin basically at the last minute before I went to bed the night before game day because at that point I still had no idea, but I think I’m going to keep him around for a while because after actually playing him so far he was a lot of fun. I still have some tweaking to do once he levels because there were some options that I frankly just didn’t really understand until someone pointed them out Wednesday night, but I had two crits where he did about 40 damage each time at Level 1, so I was pretty happy with that! Plus, with a couple of adjustments I think I’m going to like his personality a lot, too – again, much like Shadow from FF3, in that he’s very quiet and reserved, but he’s also got the social skills to speak for himself when necessary, which actually proved to be quite useful because we had one character who almost got us in a fight with a local street gang far too early in the adventure that night! I don’t normally play characters with much for charisma, so that’ll be a new avenue for me…

(To the right you can see a horrible picture of Shadow’s tabletop debut, just moments before pouncing on his next victim. Needless to say, Monster #8‘s future did not look too bright…)

8-Bit Nostalgia

Admittedly it feels a little weird, but I’ve found myself listening to a lot of video game music these days.

What’s probably even weirder is the concept that it’s technically they’re music without the actual games. Maybe a little elaboration would help at this point…

When I was growing up, the first “music” that I listened to was actually video game music, to the extent that when we would go on car trips, I would actually bring along a cassette tape of loops from my favorite games that I had recorded with my cheap, Fisher-Price cassette player. The soundtracks to Mega Man 2 and Star Tropics appealed to me long before anything with actual people singing in it, but for some reason (probably because I was eight) it just never occurred to me that there was somebody performing those “songs” … they just used a keyboard or a synthesizer instead of regular musical instruments.

I started revisiting this genre earlier this year when the Penny Arcade TV show debuted and featured 8-bit songs in the episodes … it was then that I discovered that an actual genre even existed here, or even more so an entire subculture of artists dedicated to creating songs that you would expect to find after saving a princess or gunning down an alien starship! I only got about three episodes into the show before I blindly ordered a copy of Alex Mauer’s latest album in search of a clip that particularly appealed to me in the show and low and behold, the disc actually had 42 different tracks on it of new music to explore.

(I later realized that his website actually has a number of older albums available for free download and that you can actually find just about every song of his that appears on PATV in one of them…)

It’s interesting to me that 22 years ago, this concept of listening to digitized music appealed to me on a very basic level – hey, if I could’ve brought the entire Nintendo along with me in the car, I probably would’ve (and now kids can do that, too!) – and yet here I am now over two decades later, discovering new little 90 second clips of bleeps and blorps that can get me just as excited as cranking up a good rock song when it comes on the radio. Certain ones make me feel more creative when I listen to them, and I think that’s part of the fun because nostalgia is great, but building on that and thus learning to embrace something in an entirely new way is really the difference between just reminiscing in old memories and actually creating new ones.

Nightastic Photos…

I really need to get a gallery up to post larger volumes of Disney pics like this again, but I just posted about three times this many over on Facebook and they should all be public, so feel free to stalk me out over there to see the full series. Got some neat shots of the Electrical Parade, and concluded that it’s definitely a lot more fun to admire the floats without having to endure that horrible, horrible soundtrack! 😛
