Anniversary (Sort of…) Blog Thoughts…

Although The Wedding Anniversary seems to be the key date that most couples tend to focus on, for some reason I often feel that April 20th is the more significant of the two because this is day that I actually met Sara for the first time face-to-face. We’d e-mailed and chatted over the phone for a couple of weeks prior, but it was on this day in 2006 that we finally sucked it up and made plans to meet at a local Applebee’s down the street from Sara’s apartment – our first official date.

Of course, that was four years ago already – wow – and sometimes it’s amazing to think of just how far we’ve come together in our relationship. It certainly hasn’t been easy – most things worth doing aren’t – but on this day I thought I’d take just a moment to reflect back on a few key points that I’ve noticed about how we’ve gotten where we are now and “advice” that I might offer up to others, if you will…

Rarely will things ever be 100% equal.
Someone will always make more money, spend more money, do more than their fair share of the chores, or appear to have more free time to do the things that they want to do. It sounds like a great idea, but in practice complete and total equality just isn’t very realistic. The sooner you learn to accept that and embrace the ebbs and flows of responsibility, the less fights you’ll have over who’s turn it is to do the dishes.

Talk about the things that are awkward to talk about.
In fact, the more awkward they feel, the more important it probably is for you to explore those avenues and get those thoughts out in the open. I honestly believe that if your relationship is truly unconditional like marriage is supposed to be, there shouldn’t be anything that the two of you can’t talk about, and besides, often times you’ll come out of the experience even closer to each other than when you started. Talking is always a good thing.

Figure out your household’s finances … as quickly as possible!
It’s so easy to fight about money – not having enough, not being able to spend it as you wish or do the things you want, stressing to make ends meet. That’s why our #1 goal after Sara graduated was to really dig in and start focusing on getting our budget back in order because right now we’re simply not ready to take our next steps in life (house, baby, changes to my career). Of course, it’s a result of not being as fiscally responsible over the last several years a la wedding, vacations, and so forth, but eventually it comes time to pay the piper … and as a bonus, even only four months into our debt repayment, we’ve already made significant progress and are feeling great about it!

Take time to stop and enjoy your time together.
Especially when you’re focused and working really hard to achieve a major goal like paying your way out of debt, it’s easy to lose track of yourselves and grow farther apart as you each do your own thing. Don’t. Make the most of the time that you do have, plan extra time where you can be together and not be distracted – always keep in mind that the whole point of focusing on something important is ultimately to better your lives together, so don’t lose each other in the process.

Strive to make each other feel special.
It can be through little things like a random text message to say “I was thinking about you…” or a nice foot massage after a long day, or even more encompassing surprises like the mystery vacation that my wife is planning this year for our anniversary. Whatever you do, strive to always find new and interesting ways to show your partner that you genuinely care. In my case, sometimes that even means my wife willingly bringing peanut butter into our home – if that isn’t love, I don’t know what is!

What’s the best way to keep your mind off of something?

Well, reading lots and lots of forum posts about it certainly isn’t one of them, and this one’s a double whammy because not only do I find myself wanting to run out to the grocery store just to retrieve indulgently delicious snacks that we don’t currently have in-house, but I’m also jonesin’ just a bit for Disney World and all of the luscious snackitude that Mickey has to offer.

The DIS Boards don’t seem to help because they’ve got entire forums dedicated to people posting food pictures from their vacations.

Of course, going through my own collection doesn’t really help much, either…

Oh, to be skinny, and also over in Orlando right about now… 😛

Recent Movie Recap…

2012
What can I say? This movie was exactly what we expected, so it’s kind of hard to rag on it after the fact. Sara picked it up basically because we wanted a very special effects-focused movie to show off our new Blu-Ray player, and for that, this film most certainly delivered because I think I can count the number of non-exploding scenes on one hand! Sure, some of them were just absolutely ridiculous (i.e. the flying subway cars, racing through a collapsing skyscraper, umpteen different literal cliffhangers), but at the end of the day, it was still pretty entertaining … at least as far as bad movies are concerned!

All About Steve
This one was a rental from Netflix that Sara had picked out and all I can basically say is that, well … it was weird. I didn’t really find Sandra Bullock’s quirkiness as appealing so much as just bizarre, which is odd because I’m normally a big fan. Anyways, wouldn’t recommend this one – no need to go any further than that.

Clash of the Titans
A perfect example of why 3d shouldn’t be used for everything. We actually saw this both in 3d and on the Sony Giant Screen (formerly IMAX) downtown, and I suppose it was probably best that we were nearing the end of the weekend, so our expectations were pretty low to boot. Now I’ve never seen the original and after watching this one, I’m not so sure that I actually want to, but to me this was basically a very high-budget, B-movie. Some of the special effects were cool, including the battle scene against the giant scorpion(s), but there were times when it almost felt like the action was going too fast to keep track of everything on the screen, and as for the 3d … well, that was simply horrible. I learned later that this is one of those films that wasn’t actually shot in 3d, but was converted from 2d to 3d in a very short period of time basically because Avatar had done so well in 3d.

Stupid move, and I’ve heard a lot of complaints about how the 3d made the movie unwatchable, so here’s hoping that Hollywood actually listens and stops using 3d as the cookie cutter solution to high box office numbers…

How to Train Your Dragon
For some reason I keep referring to this one as How to Date Your Dragon … not sure what that’s all about, but nonetheless, this movie actually ended up being really cute and I found myself liking it a whole lot. The voices are almost all fairly new actors (pretty much the entire cast of She’s Out of My League), and frankly I think that’s part of why I enjoyed it because they relied more on the characters themselves than the big name actors playing the voices for a change (a huge DreamWorks critique of mine, as compared to Pixar). But this one was both funny and endearing, it looked beautiful visually, and they actually made very good use of the 3d throughout the movie. Maybe that’s it – 3d is worthwhile in cartoon-style movies, but not so much in action movies … I don’t know.

Either way, I’d definitely be willing to go see Dragon again – a welcome change in my recent theatrical repertoire!

fighting with SEO rules

So this weekend I’m mostly focusing on development for a super top secret project that probably won’t be all that much of a surprise when I finally get around to launching, hopefully in a couple of months. Things have actually been flowing quite well and I’ve been fairly happy with my progress because I’m actually on schedule to finish what I started this weekend … except for this one little thing.

It’s kind of stupid so I’m not really focusing on it at the moment, but SEO is really being a pain in my ass.

I equate it to CSS because it seems like out of all of the development stuff that I do, CSS is always the bane of my existence. I mean, I can write a PHP script to pull a set of records from a database and parse the shit out of them, but when it comes to organizing the final output on the page with CSS, I’m usually longing for nested tables and a simpler time pre-CSS by about the 15 minute mark. Tonight, a similar scenario popped up with regards to SEO and frankly, I still think it’s kind of stupid…

Here’s the scenario – we’re talking about page titles, and specifically the order in which the elements should go:

*I* think it’s more aesthetically appealing in the title bar to look like this:

SITE NAME | CATEGORY » POST TITLE
(example: Comedic-Genius Media | The Humor Column » The Know-It-All Car)

Whereas everything that I read about SEO says that it should basically be that in reverse:

POST TITLE « SITE NAME | CATEGORY
(example: The Know-It-All Car « Comedic-Genius Media | The Humor Column)

Now I get that the latter might look better in the results of a search engine, but in my defense, what about that display view at the top of the browser window, or what shows if they’re using multiple tabs, for that matter? In that case, I think I’d much rather have the name of my site prominently at the front to identify my tab than a post name that might sound odd out of context and that is most likely going to get cut-off for length anyways. Besides, I like the way the hierarchy flows in my original example above from home down to the specific post being viewed – reversing it just seems, well, backwards.

So I guess ultimately my problem is that I don’t know how much I can just ignore all of this SEO stuff and focus on making quality content instead. I get flustered by all of the marketing hype pretty easily because they always seem so eager to tweak and polish keywords and positioning without actually starting with good, original content in the first place, so to put it bluntly – should I even be concerned about this? I’m sure that if somebody really wanted to, they could come through and tear ALL of my sites apart with regards to proper design, use of CSS, AND search engine optimization, and my line of thinking is that if I ever get big enough to be able to hire a professional to redesign them properly, I’ll let them do exactly that.

In the meantime, though, am I ok just sticking with whatever looks best to me or will I honestly be shooting myself in the foot by turning my back on the so-called experts???
