follow-up to the Corsair follow-up

*sigh*

So, I have another follow-up to The Great Corsair Rebate Debacle that I wrote about a few weeks ago. After my pissed off blog post, I went ahead and forwarded it to Corsair customer service and surprisingly got a couple of responses saying that they’d correct the error and send a second check right away. Well, ok – first they confusingly cited that the second rebate was invalid because the UPC hadn’t been included, which wasn’t actually the case, but ultimately I thought that the issue would finally be resolved when I got an e-mail from a manager on top of all that apologizing for the error and thanking me for my feedback.

That said, check out what I got in the mail today:

No, no – I didn’t pull a switchero and change my name to some weird, misspelling of Sara’s maiden name. Apparently Corsair’s method of “fixing” the problem somehow resulted in issuing a new rebate check to a person who doesn’t actually exist.

My final e-mail to Corsair:

To [names withheld out of courtesy],

In following up on the rebate issue that I contacted you about a few weeks ago, I wanted to let you know that I do appreciate your efforts in attempting to resolve this error. Nonetheless, I'm not sure what else to say at this point because while today I did receive the rebate check that was promised, there's not really much I can do with it except sigh.

The check I received today was made out to SCOTT MALMMAS (see attached). My name, as noted from our previous correspondence, is SCOTT SEVENER. My wife's maiden name is SARA MALAMAS, as this product was purchased before she had her legal name changed after we were married. That said, we could've worked with checks made out to SCOTT SEVENER, SARA MALAMAS, or even SARA SEVENER, however our bank is not going to let either of us cash a check that you sent to SCOTT MALMMAS because this person doesn't exist.

I think this reaffirms that your rebate department lacks a certain attention to detail that would've prevented this whole mishap from happening in the first place.

Sincerely,
- Scott Sevener

Just for the record, the new memory that I bought last week for my latest computer upgrade? Kingston.

spay or neuter your pets, clean out your CPU fans…

I just finished tearing my old motherboard out of its case to make way for tomorrow’s delivery and, just for my own amusement, I decided to pull the fan & heat sink off the CPU because I could see some dust chunks peeking through. Sure enough, remove the fan and the entire surface of the heat sink was just caked with dust! I pulled the chip itself out, too, and it doesn’t look singed or anything, but I’m wondering if it could’ve finally just gotten too warm to boot, but not so much that it physically burnt up.

I eventually was going to need a new computer anyways, mind you, as the old one was a single core P4 3.0 Ghz, being replaced by a quad-core 2.4 Ghz (not to mention almost 2x bus speed, faster memory standard, etc…), so I still feel justified with the purchase, although now I’m wondering if there may still be some life in this old gal, too! I’ll be curious to try to fire her up over the weekend and see if the deep cleaning and whatnot managed to breathe some life back into her … I guess that would mean I’d be one step closer to that media center PC that I keep saying I want to build… 🙂

Operation: Find AND Clean the Office

The Good News: Home office is now cleaner than it’s been in months and is now ready to host awesome, new computer that is scheduled to arrive in various pieces tomorrow afternoon.

The Not-As-Good News: I literally just finished cleaning now, meaning that 5 minutes really isn’t enough time for me to get to the gym and get a decent workout. I was planning on going tonight because I assumed that I really wouldn’t want to go tomorrow with new toys waiting at home, but oops…

For what it’s worth, though, I do think this place ended up turning out pretty good. I still have a few things that I want to do over time to spruce this place up and make it feel more like a real office, in hopes of boosting my productivity on creative-type stuff here, but in a three and a half hour stretch, I think I managed to sort through the rubble ok. Desk is clean, new monitor is sweet even at the inferior resolution that Sara’s laptop is pushing it at, and I’ve still got an hour to spare before the wife gets home!

Zelda or writing – hmmm, tough choice…
