update – slightly longer version

– Is it just me or did this week seem to just take forever???

– Despite the dragging out, haven’t had time to write my pissy letter to Chrysler yet to try to persuade them to fix my car. Really need to do that this weekend…

– Invitations are almost ready to go out – I’ve printed everything now, so all we have to do tomorrow is put the seals on the RSVPs and tape up the finished invitations.

– Main goals for Saturday are simply to clean the house and make a huge trip down to the post office to drop off a number of various packages. I also have a ton of web and writing stuff to do, but I’m trying to just take that as I can because otherwise I just get worked up and don’t make any progress at all.

– A little peeved because I had no less than four separate airline tickets stolen out from under me when trying to help Mom reserve a flight down for the wedding this fall. Literally pressed the final submit button after entering credit card info, only to be told “The ticket that you requested is no longer available.” Reminds me of the old Ticketmaster days… 🙁

– Really enjoyed 30 Days this week, in which an avid hunter spent 30 days living with a PETA employee learning about animal rights and such. It makes sense why they only do six episodes a season because obviously each episode is pretty involved (I wonder if they shoot multiple episodes at a time or if each has Morgan’s undivided attention?), but it’s kind of a bummer that this season is already half over! Definitely need to pick up the next DVDs when they come out probably this fall…

Weeds started back up earlier this week, too, but I’m not so sure how that one’s going to be just yet. Really can’t wait for Dexter, though!!!

– I have laundry to go fold … TTFN.

Bad news on the Netflix front…

I got an e-mail yesterday that Netflix is discontinuing their “Profiles” feature, which allows customers to have multiple users under a single account, each with their own preferences, queues, and so forth.

http://blog.netflix.com/2008/06/profiles-feature-going-away.html

Apparently I’m not the only one who’s a little angry about the issue because it’s really a useful feature for anyone who shares their account with someone else. Sara and I have been using Netflix for almost two years now and Profiles has been a godsend for our both being able to use the account together. We each have our own profile, allocated with 1 disc at a time each, so we can both rent DVDs without interferring with the other’s viewing habits at all. If she goes on a watching spree and spends a week or two watching her selections just as fast as Netflix can ship them to us, it doesn’t matter in the slightest if I sit on the latest DVD of my own to show up for the entire time – each queue advances at our own paces, and ultimately it provides this couple a really cool way to share their rental service while still maintaining our own viewing preferences.

It seemed simple enough to us, and yet Netflix cited the reason for this feature being eliminated as “too many members found the feature difficult to understand and cumbersome, having to consistently log in and out of the website.” The thing is, anyone who’s worked really anywhere in the computer industry knows that it’s usually not a good sign when a company discontinues a key feature of their service altogether. Some additional discussions surfaced today which explained that the implementation of Profiles, along with other since features, have made the site’s code too messy and it’s slowing down the experience, and that only a small fraction of users (allegedly 1%, or about 80k) actually use the feature today, which albeit is a little better than yesterday’s abrupt response to the user community simply stating that “the decision is final” in a crude and unfriendly manner, but it still leaves me wondering what we’re going to do in a few months because A) we are a part of that 1% and we do use Profiles; and B) if the feature is going to be yanked in the manner in which I’m interpreting Netflix’s announcement, it sounds like Sara’s queue will just magically disappear and if we want to continue sharing the account, we’ll have to figure out a way to manage the both of us sharing a single queue on our own.

And not for nothing because I’ve really enjoyed Netflix all of this time, but I just don’t think that that option is going to work for us. Sharing a queue means trying to alternate discs between the two of us, and re-ordering the queue if one person gets ahead of the other – the total hands-off approach that Profiles offered was really ideal for us. Which sucks because I don’t want to cancel our account, but if a viable alternative isn’t available when Profiles goes away, I’m just not sure if it’ll be worth the hassle to try to manage things on our own. While I can appreciate the need to re-evaluate a feature that only a minority of your users utilize, I think it’s also important to consider which users are taking advantage of this feature – are these your early adopters, your high-volume accounts, your customers who provide positive word of mouth advertising whenever their friends and family talk movies? If anything, I would’ve hoped to see something more along the lines of, “As of September 1, we’ll be transitioning our current Profiles feature into a new system that will provide a more user-friendly experience and make it even easier to share your Netflix account across the entire family.”

Instead … we’ll see. Netflix is taking a bit of a beating from the “vocal customers” who make use of Profiles, and I can’t exactly say that it’s unwarranted. You can’t come out with an announcement like that taking away a key feature for some of us without offering really any substantial explanation, then getting defensive when your users complain about it – it’s just bad communication. Also, “we recommend you consolidate your Profile Queues to your main account Queue or print them out?!” Seriously, who wrote this announcement and what kind of a technology company is this? No, “consolidate your queues automatically by going to the blah blah option in your Account…” at the very least??? Come on, now…

So anyways, whether anything will actually come of all of this “feedback” that’s been pouring in the last two days, it’ll be “interesting” to see what happens to my favorite DVD rental service here at the end of the summer. If a replacement isn’t offered, I certainly won’t switch to Blockbuster Online because I still hold a grudge against them from the retail days, but I might lean more towards just saving our money for Movies on Demand from our local cable company instead of using Netflix. Again, I sincerely hope that doesn’t have to happen because hands down, Netflix is a cool service, but disabling features that I personally use just because others didn’t understand them certainly isn’t a way to earn any brownie points with me.

update – short version

– Sara and I went to New York over the weekend for her friends’ wedding and had a lot of fun.

– If we can stay on track and get a little done each night, wedding invites should be out the door by the end of the week.

– Lori’s in the process of moving out on her own this week, and I think that’s awesome.

– I pretty much wasted my entire day trying to get the leak in my car fixed, and Chrysler is refusing to pay for it. I still haven’t completely written them off as a company just yet, but I need to get in touch with someone who cares about doing the right thing and standing behind their products – the “Senior Agent” who tried to “help me” today treated me like nothing more than a number and that’s just not going to work for me. 🙁

All the world’s problems cured just like that…

Somebody put together a nice, little spoof on what the news headlines might look like in a perfect world. Take your pick – China Withdraws from Tibet, Apple Unlocks the iPhone, Solar Energy at the Fingertips of Consumers for Less Than $300, More Harry Potter on the Way, and even a Chance from “The Maker” Himself to Fix His Colossal Blunder and Remake the First Three Episodes of Star Wars. Maybe someday a fraction of these will be for real…

One Too Many TPS Reports…

http://arbroath.blogspot.com/2008/06/man-having-issues-in-office.html

Dude goes nuts at an office in Russia – the first clip is apparently from the security cameras; the second not only has color but also sound, providing a nice thud when they finally taze the guy to the ground at the end.

I’ve gotta say, at first I laughed at the guy who hides in the supply closet about halfway through, but the more that I think about it, I can’t necessarily say that I wouldn’t also hide in the supply closet at my own office if something like this were to unfold. What’s worse – being called a wuss for running and hiding, or getting nailed in the head with a computer monitor???

Disney is Cool — part 2

It’s a Small World Photos from Hong Kong Disneyland
http://www.allearsnet.com/blogs/jackspence/2008/05/hong_kong_disneyland_its_a_sma.html

Now I thought this was pretty cool because I just last month I wrote my Disney column (coming soon!) about changes at the Disney parks, especially with regards to the latest hubbabaloo surrounding the idea that Disney wants to introduce some of its “classic characters” into the It’s a Small World attraction. This has a whole mess of people up in arms who say that It’s a Small World is a timeless classic that should be left alone, being one of the original attractions that Walt himself worked on for the 1964 New York World’s Fair and all.

Well, apparently they just added It’s a Small World to Hong Kong Disneyland, with all of the new character placements in tact, and judging by the pictures, it looks like this was a whole lot of fuss over nothing. I don’t know what people expected – just blatant, glossy animated figures towering over all of the dolls in each land like giants – but come on, give the Imagineers a little more credit than that! All of the characters have been painted to blend right in with all of the other dolls – if anything, it looks like it’ll be fun to try to pick out all of your favorite characters from each of the scenes – I think I like the Aladdin and Bambi ones the best, myself. As far as I’m concerned, they can just go ahead and skip Disneyland and come update our version here in Florida first… 🙂

Disney is Cool — part 1

Buzz Lightyear Takes a REAL Trip into Space!
http://media.wdwpublicaffairs.com/ContentDrillDown.aspx?DisplayItem=2cb46868-d016-4439-b863-38965c3dbbbd

As part of their Toys in Space educational program for teachers and students, NASA invited a 12-inch Buzz Lightyear action figure aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery for a trip to the International Space Station. NASA’s website offers a special section devoted to Buzz’s travels that currently features a number of games as well as a brief greeting and explanation of what the International Space Station is, all aimed at getting kids excited about science and math. It sounds like the plan is for Buzz to remain at the Space Station for several months, sharing his experiences and “motivating the troops” before returning back to Earth later on this year.

Seriously, how cool is this?! I was a huge space nut when I was a little kid, but this would’ve rocked my world – what an awesome way to get kids hooked on the ideas of space exploration while they’re still young and dreaming of the stars. I hope Disney and NASA milk this brilliant idea for all that it’s worth, and I really hope that elementary school science teachers take advantage of such a great learning opportunity!
