Muppet Evolution

As you can probably tell from the last couple of posts, I’ve been thinking a lot about The Muppets coming out in theaters next week, and more so wondering exactly what to expect from it.  On one hand, I’m really excited to see that Disney is attempting to revitalize The Muppets after they’ve more or less sat in the corner untouched since 2004 … but on the other hand, I’m admittedly also a bit nervous of what the final product is actually going to be like – especially considering that I wasn’t all that impressed with The Green Album, the collaborative release of classic Muppet songs covered by modern artists that came out earlier this year.

It also makes me curious because I’ve stumbled upon various articles citing that some of the Muppet veterans like Frank Oz were unhappy with the direction that the script was going and didn’t want to be a part of it.

Now as for the comments, I’m trying not to read too much into them because I do still have a lot of respect for Frank Oz for also tacking on that he didn’t want to elaborate on it for fear of hurting the movie, so it’s not like he’s ready to cast them off and say “To hell with them!” but instead is clearly still attached, as would only be expected for someone who performed a character like Fozzie for 20+ years of his life!  In fact, it’s probably kind of weird to look on now and see somebody else performing “his” characters to boot, so it’s probably not even worth giving that angle another thought…

At this point I almost think I’m likening it to the perspective that a lot of folks have of The Simpsons lately because even though I’m still as much as a die hard fan as I always was growing up, there are a lot of folks that pretty much despise anything created after about season 7 and are convinced that whatever is airing now 15 years later is complete and utter crap.  And I have a hard time processing that because as much as I love Mr. Plow and Who Shot Mr. Burns? and all of those other classic episodes from the early ’90s, I also recognize as a writer that you have to constantly be trying new things and reinventing yourself or you’re never going to survive to produce your 500th episode 22 years after first going on the air!

I see the same thing happen over at Disney World all of the time, and although that one’s admittedly a little bit harder for me because I’m not always the greatest person with change myself, you have to allow something to grow and evolve over time or eventually instead of Disney World being this happy place where millions love to visit each year, it would become old and dated because the people who first saw the classics like Snow White and Pinocchio are 70 years old now!  Jim Henson first started working with puppets in 1955 and debuted The Muppet Show in 1975, making them 36 years old as the prepare to hit the silver screen again this week.  If we want The Muppets to survive and continue to contribute their fun brand of whimsical entertainment to the world, the powers that be need to be able to try new things and push them in different directions that may not have originally been considered decades ago when the characters were first conceived.

And for what it’s worth, whoever made the comment that Fozzie would’ve never stooped to the level of fart shoes must not be familiar with the bear that I grew up laughing at because really, aren’t “fart shoes” just whoopee cushions that you wear on your feet???

Even more Muppets!

Although I don’t really watch Saturday Night Live much anymore (except for random clips the day after, such as these), it looks like last night’s episode might’ve been worth staying up for!

Life’s a Happy Song…

Via New York Times Magazine, here’s a sneak peak at the theme song from the new Muppet movie – written by none other than Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords fame!
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/magazine/bret-mckenzie-muppets.html

Talk about a thankful relief from the mediocre yawn of a release that was The Green Album from earlier this year – this song, on the other hand, make me feel a lot more excited that The Muppets is going to remain true to these furry childhood friends whom I cherish so dearly!

An Appetite for Destruction

Yes, contrary to the fact that she somehow managed to chew the entire bottom out of her bowl, we do actually feed this puppy quite well…

(also, it now makes an even worse sound when she bangs it around on the bathroom floor while I’m still trying to sleep)

If Scott Wrote The Twilight Saga…

Well, first and foremost, being insanely rich and all, who knows if I’d even be doing this goofy, little blog?! More likely I’d be bobbing around in the ocean on my yacht, perhaps ordering an array of hired hands to wittily blog for me, but since that’s not exactly the case just yet…

Anyways, my wife and her sister went to see the latest Twilight movie this afternoon – they’re actually still there right now, so in an effort to “get it all out of my system” so that I don’t drive them absolutely nuts when they get back, I thought it might be fun to pen up a few alternate plot twists that might’ve made this latest installment a bit more intriguing for those of us who aren’t still lusty eighth graders trapped inside the bodies of fully grown adults!

  • Edward and Jacob both reveal that they’re actually gay. Bella seems confused, so really no script changes for her whatsoever.
  • Vampire sex turns out to be a lot more violent and less gratifying than most women seem to fantasize that it would be. It’s actually pretty gross…
  • Jacob professes that he’s, in fact, able to transform into multiple animals, and Bella is torn on the thought that her shirtless boy-toy on the side spends his weekends climbing trees as a squirrel.
  • Bella’s baby turns out to be some sort of bizarre, vampire/werewolf hybrid that hates itself and spends a lot of time chewing on its own arms.
  • …and also, it pops out of her like that one from Aliens – that would be sweet!
  • In an attempt to further merchandising, a new family of mummies is discovered that hates vampires, werewolves, and humans! They even tease about Breaking Dawn: Part 2 introducing a variety of ghosts, but because they neither love nor hate, and can’t actually interact with the material world, it’s not actually that big of a deal.
  • J.K. Rowling makes a cameo appearance as a wizard with a much more dignified literary legacy.
  • Bella goes lesbian. There were a couple of hot vampire chicks in one of those earlier movies, weren’t there? Why do I just feel like a little gay would really liven this series up???
  • Everyone battles everyone in a war where there are no winners and in the end, there’s a lot of fake blood for the cleaning guys to have to mop up.
  • 30 seconds into the opening scene, all three stars abruptly turn to the camera and say, “Mahna Mahna!” and the rest of the movie is just The Muppets instead.

Thin Post : Dueling Diets

My wife has recently started showing more of an active interest in trying to lose weight again alongside with me, which is kind of nice.

It’s not always easy for a couple to try this kind of thing at the same time because at least we’ve found that instead of trying to motivate each other to stay on track and keep it up, sometimes efforts of encouragement can instead be interpreted as nagging, which as you might assume has a negative effect.  It can be tough because unlike an exercise partner who’s just a friend, having that spouse to say, “What do you mean you didn’t workout today?!” can unintentionally hit nerves when you’re already in a less than fantastic mood about missing and then possibly start misinterpreting their encouragement as hinting that they’re not happy with how you are now … even if that’s not something that’s ever been an issue in the past!

😳

Instead, what I’ve been trying to do lately is just focus both on positive reinforcement and then also feed that back into myself to say, “She went to the gym today and feels great, so I should go do it, too!” For our situation, it just seems to be a lot easier to say something nice in hopes that it will continue on tomorrow than say something else that not only doesn’t help now, but also might linger to deter from continuing on tomorrow anyways.  There’s a lot of psychology to being married, let me tell you, and I still like to think that we’re one of the better couples! 🙂

One last thing – part of Sara’s plan that hopefully will have a more direct impact on me is that she’s trying to eat better foods, which means that she’s making dinner in the evenings a lot more often. So far she’s been trying to focus on a heavy protein/veggie menu with little or no carbs, which is good because I’m trying to get rid of as many processed foods from my diet as I can, too. Plus, lunch is actually usually the hardest meal for me because I have a tendency to want to just go out to eat, so if there are leftovers already made in the fridge that I can just heat up, that’s one less thing left up to my own indiscretions!

Also, more LEGOs!

Being there during the daylight hours also finally gave me a chance to take some pictures of the new displays around the updated LEGO store…

It’s kind of hard to hold a candle to the Sleeping Beauty scene that’s literally as tall as the building next to it, but I think my favorite might just be the LEGO Buzz Lightyear and Woody because I kinda like how they’re the actual minifig versions from the Toy Story sets that came out last year.

An Epic Moment of Awesome

Picture it in your mind:

Finding themselves surrounded by a horde of drakes after attempting passage through one of the most treacherous parts of the region, a long combat ensues until the party slowly but surely beats the larger of the drakes nearly into submission.  At that point he nearly makes his getaway as he extends his massive wingspan and takes off into the air … except for the spirited avenger who, upon taking notice that the target he’s sworn to down is attempting to flee, disappears in a flash and moments later is seen plunging his final blow into the beast 25 feet up in the air before riding its unconscious body back down to the ground in victory…

I never could’ve imagined Relentless Stride having such a bad-ass result when I chose it for my level 3 Encounter Power a month or so ago, but needless to say, I was pretty happy with the outcome! 🙂

P.S. If you’re into D&D pictures, don’t forget that you can check out all of the other photos that I’ve taken from the campaign I’m currently playing in over here.
