Downloadable Content (the podcast)

In my ongoing quest to find things that I can listen to while I work, lately I came back across the old Penny Arcade Downloadable Content podcast that they used to do between 2006 – 2009. It’s kind of weird – I remember originally thinking that it was somewhat boring because it’s essentially a microphone setup to record their writing process for the strips, and yet now after salivating over two seasons worth of 4th Panel episodes of Penny Arcade: The Series, it seems that I can’t get enough of this fly-on-the-wall brainstorming experiment.

I figure it’s one of two things – either the videos somehow helped me to recognize value where before it just sounded like two guys occasionally talking, or (more likely) I myself am at a more creative place than I was 4 or 5 years ago and thus whereas before I could barely bother to do any writing myself, now that I’m doing it on a regular basis again it’s actually interesting to me to hear how other folks are doing it, too.

Bored to Death (the TV show)

Very much so by chance, this evening I caught the trailer for season 3 of HBO’s Bored to Death and after hitting up some of the old episodes from the first season, it reminded me what a quirky, fun little show it is. It kind of reminds me of Flight of the Conchords, with that random, subtle humor that almost eludes you if you’re not paying attention, but I love the idea of a blocked writer moonlighting as a private detective and even more so, I especially love just how innocently excited George gets out of participating in the most mindless things that still sound like a lot more fun than his boring, regular life…

Definitely looking forward to catching up on this one before the new season starts in October!

more 8-bit tunes from David Pencil

About a year ago I blogged about getting reintroduced to enjoying video game music as actual music via Alex Mauer’s work featured on Penny Arcade TV. Since then, it seems like season 2 somehow managed to be even better than the first, with the intriguing addition that it seemed like a lot of the music featured this go around was written specifically for each episode of the show.

As it turns out, I think it was, and even cooler yet, you can now listen to a playlist over two hours long that features each and every one of the 69 tracks that musician David Pencil created for PATV on his website! Seriously, I’ve been hopping around this thing pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks – sometimes a little 8-bit Christmas music, other times a rousing fury of competitive tracks – there’s really a little of everything in there…

Definitely looking forward to picking up a copy of the soundtrack if/when it releases along with the DVDs later on this year, and with any luck maybe we’ll see a continuing role for David in season 3 of the show as well! Seriously, how do these guys keep finding such amazing people to work with for this project?!

Much Love for the LEGO Minifigs!

Also while over at Downtown Disney, we wandered into the LEGO store and I found a bunch more of the collectible minifig series’, which I thought was kind of cool because I haven’t been able to get any in a while on account of both Walmart and Target bumping them for shelf space. They had a bin each of series 3 and 4, so I grabbed a couple and ended up getting them mostly free from some points that apparently I had saved up…

Granted, I probably need to find some shelf space for these little guys because I’m running out of space on my desk, but I do think that they’re a neat idea and I’m glad to see that LEGO is already getting ready to put out a 5th series of minifigs here shortly. They’re kind of like trading cards for people who like to build things, and I guarantee you if these had been around back when I was a kid, I probably wouldn’t have even had the slightest interest in all of those football cards that I collected despite not really even liking the sport growing up!

dinner and a movie

So last night we went over to Orlando (in the pouring rain) and went out to eat at the new dine-in theater at Downtown Disney, and I don’t want to brag, but it was pretty freaking incredible!

Comfy leather seats, quality food, and the Oreo Mudslide that I got basically tasted like a milkshake from heaven (i.e. very, very good!). And surprisingly the prices between dinner and the movie really weren’t that bad either, compared to the robbery down the street from us back home. Granted, the movie itself was only so-so (the final Harry Potter movie, in 3D), but I definitely look forward to going back sometime in the future!

(I’ll have a full review of our experience up on that new Disney website that I keep teasing, but haven’t actually finished and properly announced yet…)

new D&D campaign photos, AND LINKS!

As promised, here are a couple of new D&D pics from the campaign that I play in, along with more importantly a link to the wiki that we’ve been using to explore this strange, new world that our characters find themselves in! Now granted, you won’t exactly find anything about my character here just yet because I still haven’t gotten around to writing his backstory, but still, I think it’s a pretty neat resource to be able to share and to have a flashy, cool photo gallery to showcase my photos to boot?!

We’re having a lot of fun with in so far, so I hope you enjoy perusing our little world here as well!

my new favorite LEGO site!

I was first pointed towards The Brothers Brick via the Legos to Jupiter post that I put up earlier, but little did I know that this was merely the tip of the iceberg. I’ve since literally gone through 100 pages of archives and, well, I really liked what I found! Specifically…
