That’s one pricey tank of gas!

One Tank of Gas Costs Spokane Man $81 Billion
http://www.curiousread.com/2009/03/one-tank-of-gas-costs-spokane-man-81.html

I don’t know if it’s funny or scary that the very first person who he talked to didn’t question that $81 billion was a bit too much to pay for pretty much any consumer transaction, as if they see charges in the 11-figure range go through every day! Go go, customer service…

computer upgrade plan

So I’ve finally given in and admitted to myself that a portion of our tax refund this year is going to upgrade my desktop computer.

I’m still not entirely thrilled about the idea just because we’re trying to focus so much on debt reduction this year and it’s a decent chunk of money, but I can’t keep piggy-backing off of Sara’s laptop forever and there are some things that I’ve had a really tough time doing on it anyways. I mean, I can write just fine and I’ve also managed to limp through a small amount of photo editing and website updates, but it’s nothing compared to being able to sit at my desk and have everything where I need/expect it. Aside from last week’s tagging work, I’ve been putting a lot of web development for my other upcoming site on hold just because it’s such a pain to do on a smaller machine.

So anyways, I’ve decided to take somewhat of a two-phased approach to this to help conserve both money and my own sanity. The plan is to now buy a new motherboard, CPU, memory, and that’s it. When these arrive, I’m just going to drop them into my existing case with my current hard drive, power supply, and CD-ROM drives, and pray that the existing install of XP doesn’t freak over the massive hardware changes. This will get me back on the road again and give me a healthy performance boost to boot, and then later on this summer when we’ve got a little spare money and I’m not as pressed for time, I’ll go ahead and drop another block of memory into the thing, new video card, a copy of Vista 64-bit, and go through the whole re-install process all over again.

I mean, don’t get me wrong – I’d love to just do everything now and have a kick ass new machine to work off of, but finances aside, I realized today that I don’t think I even have Vista-compatible versions of some of my software and I really need them to do either website work or put together the books I’m getting ready to start. I’d hate to spend a weekend or two upgrading, only to find that I’m boned because my software doesn’t like Vista. I’ll still figure it out eventually and do something with it because I do want to upgrade to 64-bit to take advantage of the extra RAM, but it’s just not something I feel like dealing with right now!

And of course, on top of all that, as previously mentioned on Twitter I also need to replace my iPod because apparently repair isn’t an option, but that’s going to have to wait until after we get Sara’s car fixed to see if there’s any money leftover. Boy, that sure went quick, and we don’t even have it yet… :O

LiveJournal, meet Twitter

Oh yeah, one more thing… (who am I, Steve Jobs?)

Pretty much because I still feel guilty about not blogging nearly as much as I did last year, I finally broke down and setup LoudTwitter to post my daily Tweets from Twitter. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect because I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about it not working and the primary how-to post on LJ has roughly 145,000 steps to it, but apparently it’s out of date and they’ve made some improvements because setup was actually really easy – pretty much just supply the login/password for both Twitter and LiveJournal, activate LoudTwitter via the auto-sent e-mail, and simmer to perfection. There’s an option to post via ATOM now, so none of the post-by-email gibberish that’s mentioned in the previous.

Mind you, I’m still a little curious on the configuration because I caught it double-posting tonight, but I also messed with the posting time once today, too, so that might’ve had something to do with it. Also, I don’t like how some of the bullets overlap my post icon, but that’s an issue with my theme, not LoudTwitter.

All in all, I think this might work out better than I had expected because at least now the Twitter posts will all be archived in one place and I can go back and peruse those as well when I’m feeling nostalgic. Fun stuff…

revisiting Hyrule

Sara downloaded the original Legend of Zelda on the Wii Virtual Console Friday when she was home recovering, which means that I will get approximately zilch done this weekend revelling in gaming nostalgia. Honestly, there are times when I think we play more of the classics on that thing than our actual Wii games! But it’s just so nice to be able to hop from one to another without wasting fifteen minutes in between each blowing in cartridges and praying to the Nintendo gods that it will finally work this time…

As of this current moment, I’m stumbling through Level 3 and consistently getting my ass whooped by the red darknuts – embarrassed both because I had to look up what those little beasts are called, and also simply because of just how many times I’ve died in this game so far! And it’s funny because I’ve played a bit of Zelda from time to time on various Flash sites and made it quite far, but first it was just being uncoordinated in Level 1, then it was those bastard statues in the magic boomerang room in Level 2, and now it’s a herd of darknuts in Level 3 … and yet I dominated at this game when I was 12?!

I’ve made it my goal with this one to play through the whole thing solely from memory and exploration, without any guides or hintbooks or web searching, which kind of goes beyond how I normally tend to play games these days, with strategy guide firmly in hand, but I think I owe it to 12 year-old Scott on this one…not to mention Princess Zelda! Aside from missing a few heart containers, I think I can get to the last Level without assistance, but we’ll see…

So needless to say, if anybody needs me I’ll be plopped in front of the TV getting little else done besides collecting Triforce fragments from the far corners of Hyrule for the remainder of the weekend. Wish me luck, and death to the darknuts!

  • 23:22 Debating whether we want to spent $100 for Netflix’s streaming TV box. Neat concept, but not the best 10,000 titles to choose from… #
  • 23:23 Plus, I don’t understand why I have to add movies to my “Instant Queue” via the web instead of just browsing from the player. Seems tedious. #

also, spoof on FreeCreditReport.com songs…

I found this particularly amusing because although I enjoy the jingles just as much as the next guy, anyone who’s actually attempted to retrieve merely a free credit report via freecreditreport.com knows that it’s just a scam to get you to sign up for their Triple Advantage program which comes with a $14.95 monthly recurring charge … not exactly what you would call free.

Note: For those curious, the actual site that offers free credit reports once a year under the federal law is anualcreditreport.com – funny, there’s now a disclaimer on freecreditreport.com stating that their site isn’t actually the correct site for the federally-mandated reports.

“We know that we’re being deceptive with our website and our nationally-televised advertising, but this little disclaimer gets us out of all sorts of legal liabilities even though nobody reads it…”

Hey, look – resolutions!!!

That’s right – I finally found the resolutions that I wrote almost two months ago now, and although at first I was thinking about re-writing some of them given what’s transpired over the last seven weeks, going over them a second time I think I’m just going to run with them as-is because I’m actually pretty content with where I am thus far.

I’m not sure if I want to do it every quarter or wait for the six-month mark, but I think this year I’ll do a couple of follow-up posts to track my progress along the way. I’m trying to take these things a little more seriously this year, so fingers crossed…

Why I’ll never buy Corsair memory again…

So I finally have a follow-up on this little gem: http://ssevener.livejournal.com/273618.html

Today Corsair’s “rebate” offering showed up in my mailbox, some 12.5 weeks after it was originally submitted, and guess how much the check was for … $15.

So not only did they not let me redeem rebates for both of the products that I’d purchased, but they even went one step sleazier than even I had imagined and opted to honor the lesser of the two rebates.

Well, I hope the $25 savings was worth it to them because they just lost a loyal customer for life. I used to go out of my way to buy Corsair memory because it not only performs well, but it’s also some of the better priced RAM on the market, but now after this – forget it. Crucial and Kingston make quality alternatives, and usually don’t even bother with mail-in rebates.

Learn from my mistakes and steer clear of mail-in rebates altogether, as well as deceptive companies like this, kids. Way to do business…
