So this whole Netflix / Qwikster thing…

I’m sure we’ve all gotten the weird e-mail from Reed Hastings by now.

You know, the politician’s apology where you act like you’re all good and sorry when in actuality you made up your mind long ago and don’t really give a shit if some people don’t agree with you.

Yeah – that one…

Honestly, it’s really disappointing for me to see them doing whatever the hell it is that they think they’re doing because I actually really like Netflix as a company and I don’t necessarily want to see them drive their business model into the ground, which is exactly what I think they’re doing with splitting off the DVD rentals to this new company called Quikster.

The logic just doesn’t make sense. They spent the last ten years building the Netflix name with the mail rental service, and now they’re willing to just take all of their eggs and chuck them from one basket to the other because streaming video is the future of media! To me it feels really disingenuine to spend all of that time building a brand, and then want to do the old switcheroo when you’ve got a new product coming out, leaving the old, very successful product with a name that sounds frighteningly like one of those creepy Amway products…

Other reasons that it doesn’t add up:

  • Their streaming service kind of sucks. I mean, sure, it technically works and is becoming available on more and more devices all the time, but isn’t everyone always complaining about the selection being trapped in the land before time? I know that’s why we never really used it.
  • On top of that, it’s been made quite clear that all of the studios hate Netflix, whether they’re jacking up rates or making them wait a 28-day grace period while they’re happily selling to the other distributors. What’s there to make them feel good about those relationships when companies are coming back to the table wanting 10x the licensing fees that they collected from them last time?!
  • Also on the hate wagon … ISPs aren’t really thrilled with Netflix either because they’re such a bandwidth hog and in the situation of cable companies, also cut into their other service offerings. Studies have shown that Netflix ALONE dominates 20% of the Internet traffic in the USA during primetime hours. 20% is alot!

And of course, back to the user experience – why in the world would people get excited about paying more money to now have to access two completely independent systems whether they want to watch movies on demand or via DVD rental?! This is the part that just baffles me the most because it really seemed like Netflix had a perfectly good system going – “Do you want to watch that Instantly or via DVD tomorrow?”“Sorry, we don’t have that movie available Instantly, but we can have the DVD shipped out to you for tomorrow!” All of that brilliant integration will be completely lost with the new system that has been described.

I think a sign of how out of touch these guys are was a quote that I saw from some Netflix executive that basically said, “We can’t keep offering the DVD service as a $2 add-on to our streaming service…” which is ironic because I always looked at it exactly the opposite way. For me, streaming was the add-on and DVDs by mail were the core product, and frankly, that’s what built the Netflix brand to become the powerhouse that it is today. And the thing is, I think the company could make a huge name for itself in the streaming arena, too – they’re already well on their way to getting there, but bastardizing what got you here in the first place certainly isn’t the way to do it.

That said, this is a company that has rolled back some horrific blunders based on customer feedback in the past, so I suppose there’s still a chance that they might come to their senses and realize the awesome advantage that they have by leveraging streaming and rentals against each other instead of making them competing products from different companies.

Will it actually happen, though? I don’t know, but before then, by god someone needs to teach Reed Hastings how to write an actual apology letter…

Thin Post : An Actual PLAN!

So after mulling over my last lackluster post from a couple of weeks ago, I’ve decided that maybe I do need an actual plan after all…

I tried the passive thing throughout the summer and it got me absolutely nowhere. There are only about 3 months left this year and I’d still like to make another dent because it sounds a lot more impressive to say that I lost 60% of my excess fat than a mere 30%! And it’s really going to suck, but I think it’s about time for something drastic again.

Something like – getting up early to exercise in the mornings!

I know, I know – it sounds absolutely crazy, especially for a night owl like myself, but at the same time, what have been the two biggest contributors to weight loss for me this year so far? Quiting soda and quiting potato chips – two things that I swore I’d never be able to pull off because I just loved them too much. And the thing is, I don’t necessarily have to always get up early and exercise for the rest of my life, but in order to get ahead of the gut, maybe it’s time for me to make another sacrifice.

The plan is to start Monday morning, and I honestly haven’t really thought it out much further than that, but we’ll see how I do with a simple 20-30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical and take it from there. Ideally, I guess I’d like to eventually up the intensity to keep the timeframe under 30 minutes because any more just seems like it will cut into my morning routine even more, but that’s probably more of a discussion for two weeks from now…

…assuming that I’m actually able to pull this thing off…

retaining old passions while also kindling the new…

The latest episode of Webcomics Weekly discusses a topic that I know I’ve been battling a lot these days, so I wanted to take just a couple of minutes to walk through my experiences on the idea.

Specifically, Dave spoke of the comics documentary that he’s been feverishly working on as of recent, and how he’s noticing that he’s somewhat less excited to work on his primary comic (Sheldon), instead choosing to spend the time digging deeper into the documentary and even his more recent sci-fi strip, Drive.

And this is something that I can definitely relate to in the here and now because although I’m not really proud of it, I haven’t exactly been the best lately with deadlines for my humor column! My excuse has been not only the two projects that I’ve currently been struggling to finish up, but also in part the other five looming just off the side of my plate that I want to also finish before the end of the year. It’s just so much more intriguing and new and fresh and exciting to work on these new challenges than to wade through another weekly column, even though don’t get me wrong I do still enjoy writing that one in its own way, too.

What I’ve been trying to tell myself to keep things in check is that unless I’m ready to completely shed the old and place all of my eggs in the new basket (which I know would be crazy to do), it’s important that I continue to cultivate my earlier works simply because those are what got me to the place now where I can branch out and try the new stuff that I’m entertaining. Sometimes that really sucks because I find myself faced with so much ongoing content to focus on that I feel like I’ve gotten little done against the new projects for the week, but then again, I suppose that’s a greater issue about biting off more than you can chew than simply learning how to properly balance priorities.

The podcast in its entirety is a really good listen, though – just under an hour in length – and includes a lot of good talk and insight from three of the brightest independent creators in the comic industry today. I mean, I enjoy it and I don’t even create a comic strip (anymore), so there ya go!

Sarah Palin in the funny papers…

Now I don’t normally read Doonesbury, but this little series about the unauthorized biography of Sarah Palin that Joe McGinniss is releasing caught my eye. I guess there was a bit of controversy where a couple of newspapers refused to run the strips on account of “journalistic integrity,” but we can save that debate for another day.

For now, let’s just sit back and enjoy the Sarah Palin mockery in all of its glory, and don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the final (?) installment!

I’m so sick of politics…

Both sides, honestly.

All anyone wants to do is fight anymore – one side versus the other – and it seems like it doesn’t even matter what the issue at hand is … democrats like the color purple, republicans decree purple the anti-christ of colors and how orange is the only real color that anyone should ever care about.

It scares me that these discussions are so much about party lines at this point, where one side is willing to shut the entire government down if they don’t get their way. How that is even possible just completely blows my mind, and yet here we’ve seen it happen multiple times this year. It’s like watching a bunch of babies fighting in the playroom, where that one kid is always threatening to take his toys and go home if he doesn’t get his way, except that it’s a different kid each week and there are actually people’s lives hanging in the balance whenever they decide to dig their heels in the ground on this or that budgetary issue that no one can come to an agreement on.

If these were normal business employees and not government employees, they would’ve been fired a long time ago because you just can’t do that kind of stuff!

And it seems like each issue becomes even more venomously supported than the last, too … it’s like they build upon their own stubbornness and ignorance, and even when they finally get everything they ever wanted *cough* budget *cough*, the next week they’re right back in the ring swinging again, willing to throw their own grandmothers out on the street to make their point.

It doesn’t even seem like they’re arguing over things that matter anymore – so much bickering over a “budget” that never seems to actually get followed anyways, trying to “fix the jobs issue” by bickering over the same old kickbacks that only benefit those at the top who aren’t experiencing any real hurt in the first place, and then on top of all of that the GOP is even already internalling bickering back and forth about who’s moderately more in support of one half-ass notion than the other over their presidential nomination for next year.

Sometimes I tend to get sucked into these debates because they seem like important discussions to be having, however more and more I find me distancing myself from anything of the sort because at the end of the day, nothing seems to get solved and the only outcome is a lot of angry supporters on both sides, another day’s worth of sensationalised headlines, and the rest of us left scratching our heads wondering why these few get paid so well to not support so many.

It makes me wonder what kind of real productivity (not to mention happiness) I would find in my own life if I were to just stop watching the news clips and reading the headlines for a while. Chances are whenever I do come back, it’s going to be the same folks going back and forth about the same issues all over again anyways.

TV, Now and Future

Mind you, I haven’t really been watching a whole lot of TV lately, but with fall premieres being right around the corner, this seemed like as good a time as any for a quick recap of the good, the bad, and the boring…

Just Finished…

  • Curb Your Enthusiasm – Honestly, this whole season was really hit and miss for me. It did have some funny bits (i.e. Larry and Rosie fighting over the same girl), but it seems like the circumstances are becoming a lot less Larry being weird and getting himself into trouble and a lot more People being jerks to Larry. I miss seasons 1-5…
  • Entourage – I was really hesitant on the direction this one was taking, but somehow they turned it around and came up with a halfway respectable series finale. I guess just the scenes with Vince getting caught up doing coke were a bit much for me – this is supposed to be a happy show!
  • Leverage – Ok, so I guess there’s still technically one more episode left, but it’s not until November so it might as well be over. But I’m really liking this show these days – it’s probably my favorite one on television right now. So, will Hardison and Parker finally officially hook up in the series finale???

Just Starting…

  • Bored to Death – Eternally grateful that HBO eventually swapped out season 2 for season 1 on demand, I’ve been able to completely rewatch/catch-up on this show over the last month or so, and I’m really looking forward to season 3. This show just has a really laid back, fun vibe to it … plus, it’s a show about a writer, which is always fun for me.
  • Dexter – Curious to see what Edward James Olmos and Mos Def bring to the show this year, although I’m always wondering what they can possibly to do top themselves from last time with this one. My favorite season is still the one with John Lithgow – it’s tough to beat the erie, ominous ending of Rita’s death…
  • The Simpsons – I’m honestly not even sure why this one has to be in the list – it’s The Simpsons, so of course I’m going to watch it!
  • How I Met Your Mother – I’ve actually been slacking on this one lately, which is weird because I was really enjoying it when the wife and I first started watching it … we literally went through the first four seasons on DVD just as quickly as Netflix could send them to us! Since then I’ve watched bits and pieces, but I need to get back into watching on a regular basis.

No Longer Care…

  • The Office – I didn’t even get to see the finale where Michael left because I missed it and it didn’t get recorded, but I’ve seen some of the episodes after and that show is really struggling now. As much as I (used to) enjoy some of the supporting cast, Steve Carell is the US version of The Office and it won’t last long without him (even though NBC will certainly beat the horse to death trying…).
  • Weeds – My wife is still into this show, but I kind of lost interest when the plotline went from quirky weed show to harder drugs/also people getting murdered … I guess weed is a gateway drug after all! Too bad I’m just not interested anymore…

Mario Kart, the toys!

I was pretty impressed when one of these little guys showed up on Friday as a birthday present from my sister and her husband.

I was even more so impressed when I went to Target this evening and came to find that there’s actually an entire series of these things, complete with an awesome track and everything!

Even More Pics: http://www.knex.com/mariokartwii/

My only bummer is that these aren’t actually made out of Legos and instead the less popular K’nex, but the wife has already cited that she wants the Yoshi kart, and they’ve definitely got some pretty sweet looking track sets to choose from, too, so something tells me that before long we’ll have a ginormous kart track winding around our entire house, anyways…

Just as long as we don’t have to do Rainbow Road, that is!

There and back again…

I don’t know what it is about the Lord of the Rings movies, but I really can’t watch just one of them without setting myself up for a ginormous marathon to watch all three of them together!

Well, at least not all in a row – the extended editions are something like 4-5 hours a piece…

But it’s certainly manageable over the course of a few days, which is exactly what I just finished doing tonight after first catching The Fellowship of the Ring on TV earlier this week. For the most part, they’re good background movies to watch while I’m writing because I’ve seen them all so many times, although admittedly I guess I normally watch them on TNT or whoever is airing them at the time because I did catch myself doing a lot more watching than writing on the second and third movies, which I ended up watching via the Extended Edition DVDs.

It was a nice remind of just how good those movies are – I have my favorite scenes from each of them … the original forming of the fellowship in the first movie; pretty much the entire battle at Helm’s Deep in the second movie; and a bunch in the third – when Aragorn reclaims the sword of Elendil, later when he along with Legolas, Gimli, and the undead show up at the Battle of Pelennor Fields, and my personal favorite of the 15 endings … when Aragorn as king bows to the hobbits at his own coronation ceremony.

Good stuff!

Anyways, I’ve been thinking that I want to eventually start reading more again, and maybe this series would be a good one to start with, seeing as the last time I actually went through the books was probably back in grade school, and early grade school at that! I’ve been looking for an excuse to pick up a Kindle, so I think that may be my goal to pick one up by Christmastime to give me something to do in hopefully the bit of downtime that I’m working so hard to earn!
