When it rains, it…well, you know…

What a wet-lookin’ day!!!

It was kinda neat watching the thunderstorms come in from the view at work, as you could literally watch the rain move across the land, enveloping one suburb before leaving behind sunshine and moving along to the next – very cool.

It was less than neat, however, trying to come home when I soon discovered that I was nearly out of gas. Never before have I needed an umbrella while pumping gas underneath an awning!!! Also, the power flickered out and that kinda made me nervous, but having the need to wring my pants out before getting back into the car was the last straw – not cool at all.

And I didn’t get to swim tonight because of the lightning…and I’m certainly not getting up early to go do it tomorrow morning, so tomorrow night better be nicer, damn it!

No Interest Whatsoever

This weekend was particularly lazy, as most of my weekends tend to be, however I’m ever so happy to report that a single, solitary event caused the entire two-day rendevouz to be beautifully worthwhile! To rip off a perfectly good catchphrase, a fifteen minute call saved me much more than fifteen percent, but not on my car insurance, mind you. Over the last month I paid off one of my fairly large credit cards, so likewise once I received notification that the account was empty, it was time to call and get that baby closed…but wait just a gosh darn minute! I still had one card with an extraordinarily high interest rate, so using my ultra-slick negotiation skills, I ended up keeping the account open to the tune of a 0% balance transfer rate until September 2005…

So for those who can’t quite keep up with the math, at this point I still owe various creditors a bit of money, but I’m not paying them any interest to borrow it anymore…and there was much rejoicing! Between the two refinancing options I chose over the last month, I figure that I’ll be saving about $800 – $1000 between now and Christmas – that’s a cool grand that can be used to pay off my principal that much sooner, or instead purchase myself a very cool Christmas present indeed.

Nope – pay off the principal, damn it! I’ve already got a huge television…that’s just going to have to be enough for the time being.

In other news, for the first time in lord knows how long, I went swimming tonight and it was great! Well, actually it was more like floating for the most part because I didn’t want to risk “waking my neighbors” because I was “breaking the rules” by “utilizing the swimming pool after hours,” but it was still nice to just float around and relax for a while. I must say that it did really scare me how out of touch with the water and swimming and all of that that I’ve become, as I definitely need to spend some more time over there in the future, but I really don’t think that’s going to be a problem. I’ve been trying to force myself into some sort of an exercise program now for quite some time with little success, but after “swimming” a few laps I certainly felt tired! Tired, but of course not sweaty, and that’s most definitely a plus when considering any workout plan for me!

I figure that I’ll start with a half an hour or so every other night this week to see how it goes. They say that swimming is supposed to be one of the best types of exercise because it hits just about every important muscle group, so we shall see what happens! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to watch some Fraggles before bedtime…

“But this is HDTV – it’s got better resolution than the real world!”

So it’s finally here! After two long weeks of waiting and running from hurricanes and arguing with delivery personnel over the phone, my new TV finally came yesterday and I’m happy to say that vegging around all day is about to be taken to new heights! No “couch sores” yet, but I’ve really only had a chance to watch a handful of movies thus far…

  • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (it was on when I was calibrating the TV, but I just didn’t have the heart to turn poor Arnie off)
  • Independence Day (the first realsci-fi flick to grace my big screen)
  • Die Hard 3…with a Vengence(again, it happened to be on and I didn’t feel like getting up to swap DVDs)
  • Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (the subtle, yet quite apparent homosexual give-and-take between Frodo and Samlooked strikingly beautiful in all of its widescreen glory!)
  • The Sum of All Fears(okay, really just the part when the bomb goes off, but it still makes the list)
  • National Geographic – Exploring the Everglades (hey, it beats working…)Overall I’m very happy with my purchase – it was something that I probably should’ve done a long time ago…but then again, I couldn’t exactly afford it a long time ago, but times they are a changing. Now all that’s left is for me to buy a hot-air popcorn popper and I’ll have the complete home theater experience alive and kicking here in casa de Scott!

Suggestions for tomorrow night’s feature presentation???

Home Sweet Home

Whew…

That about describes it – what an eventful couple of days! I drove back from Lake Mary this morning…it took about four hours thanks to bumper-to-bumper traffic on I-4, but I was just happy to be going home. You know, maybe it’s just me, but it kind of redefines the meaning of irony when you evacuate across the state to evade the hurricane and yet, hours later its changed its course and is still coming straight for you – talk about pushing that idea of being followed to the Nth degree. Nonetheless, I can’t put into words how happy I was to hear that the Tampa City Center was back up and running this morning, and that this adventure was finally coming to a close!

Well, at least for me. Between TV and the Internet and the local newspapers, I’ve been fixed on all of the pictures of what happened over in Punta Gorda and it’s become very clear to me that everyone in the Tampa / St. Petersburg / Clearwater area was extraordinarily lucky yesterday. I know that things were pretty bad in Orlando – saw a lot of the damage first hand on the journey home, as we had to drive around trees covering one of the freeway on-ramps that hadn’t been cleared yet – but just seeing how hard they got hit on the coast, I can only imagine what the damages would’ve been like had Charley came ashore in Tampa instead. I don’t care what the fools said about how evacuating our area was a joke – it was something that had to be done, other cities would’ve done the same thing, and in the end we were just very, very fortunate.

So now I’m home, trying to unpack and clean up and try to enjoy the rest of the weekend, but right now I find it hard to really feel burdened by even the most mundane of tasks when you know that people a hundred miles south of you wish that they could be doing the dishes or unpacking their clothes. Welcome to Florida…

Storm Update…

Sure, they’re predicting flooding and high winds and lots of damage, but let’s focus on the important part – I’m not getting my new TV this weekend!!! šŸ™

Yep, I got the confirmation message when I came home earlier this afternoon – the earliest I can have it now is Tuesday, which could prove to be a problem not simply because I work on Tuesday, but also because I might not even be home on Tuesday! Some days you just can’t win…

So long story short, the company that I work for has myself and about forty of my co-workers put up in an above-average hotel somewhere north of Orlando doing the whole “disaster recovery” thing, which actually worked out pretty good because I didn’t really have anyplace else to go anyways! I only had about an hour to both pack and batten down the hatches, so to speak, so hopefully I’ll come back to anything but a living room full of glass and trees and stuff, but nonetheless I am safe, so please don’t worry about me. They’re paying me quite well, indeed, to be over here right now and it sure beats sleeping on a cot in a high school gynasium somewhere, so if you want to be concerned about something, be concerned about the safe and successful delivery of my TV next week…whenever that may be.

And I had picked up the new cable box this morning and everything…damn.

An Everlasting Game of Catch-Up…

I find myself getting more and more detached from the Internet these days, which probably isn’t such a bad thing anymore. I recall the Michigan days of spending hours upon hours on the computer when I got home from my shit-for-nothing job…and I can’t say as though I really miss those days, you know?! Maybe there’s just something about getting paid to sit in front of a computer all day that sort of takes all the fun out of it – when I get home I might logon long enough to check the SPAM in my e-mail, read the latest Penny Arcade and Theater Hopper comics, and more than anything check in on my work e-mail.

But life is good – enough so that I could probably express the last couple of weeks with bullet points if I so desired…

  • I work at least fifty hours a week now, although everyone keeps telling me that I need to back it off – I wish it were that easy, but I feel responsible when thirty-some people don’t have any work to do because I went home early.
  • Nonetheless, I really like my job now. I’ve been put in somewhat of a new position since about June – same pay rate and title, but very different duties – and it’s enjoyable. It took me nearly seven years of driving trucks and unloading stock at all hours of the night to finally find a job that I looked forward to showing up for every day, and by golly here we are now.
  • I have decided, however, that I really need to stop looking for relationships at work because since I started last fall, nothingĀ has really panned out yet…and for the most part, I think that that’s ok. Sure, there are times when I really would like someone to share the time with, but then again life is just really busy right now and part of me knows that it wouldn’t be fair to bring anyone but another workaholic into my world at this point. Maybe I need to just focus on friends at this point – they always seem to end up evolving into more than that anyways, and it’s much easier on me to boot!
  • A new training class starts tomorrow and you know what that means – fresh booty for all my men!
  • I saw The Bourne Supremacy this weekend and was utterly disappointed – good thing the ticket was free when I bought the first movie! It’s not even worth going into details because I thought it was simply horrible. Stay home and watch the first installmentĀ again instead…
  • I’m not sure if my book is ever going to get done. I mailed the first third of it up to my sister over a month ago and still have yet to see anything in return, and I was kind of counting on the artwork serving as my motivation to get the rest of it ready for publication. I wish I could draw myself because I hate having to depend on somebody else who obviously couldn’t give a damn about drawing anymore…but then again, I guess that would make me an artist instead of a writer, now wouldn’t it?
  • Along those same lines, she worries me sometimes and I just can’t put my finger on why anymore. I know that you have to let people make their own decisions and learn from their own mistakes, but the preferred scenario I thought would be to learn from somebody else’smistakes. Such is life.
  • I bought myself a birthday present today – a very BIG birthday present!!! As most know, I’ve been paying off bills like mad and finally decided that it was time to do something nice for me, so a few grand later came an early birthday present that will certainly help the time to pass more efficiently! It is to be delivered on Saturday, so I now sit before what will undoubtedly be the longest five days known to man, but if anything at least now I’ve got a high-definition horizon to look forward to…
  • I’m also thinking about getting a dog again, and I know that I talked about it before, but I’m a littlemore serious about it this time. I think it would really help to get me in the swing of exercising again and it might be nice to have somebody other than myself to talk to around home, but I’m still just a bit hesitant simply because I think I’d feel bad not being able to provide room for him or her to run around. I don’t really want a big dog or anything, but I certainly don’t want a small / tiny / show model either – being able to catch a frisbee without going for a ride is definitely a prerequisite! Knowing that I’ll probably be in this same apartment for at least another year, it’s just about enough to sway me towards the negative side, but we’ll see!See you in another two to three weeks, or so my posting record stands thus far…

Enough with the “free” cruises, already!!!

There was another message on my machine when I got home tonight letting me know that I’d been selected to win a free cruise to somewhere tropical. This is like the 4th one in a month. Sorry guys, but I got the joke…

Did my name go on some kind of suckers list when I actually bought into the first one and even gave them a check to cover half of the administrative costs associated with that cruise? It just amazes me how a free cruise can end up costing upwards of $500…maybe I wasn’t paying attention in Economics 101 or something.

How much should a cruise cost if one were to pay for it up front, knowingly, that is???
