2013 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 15 – Interior Decorating, Part 1

Well, the tree is finally up!

Decorating has been going a bit slower than I would’ve liked it to this year and I’m still not entirely sure if lights are going to get put up outside, but at least last night I took a few hours and finally dug out the Christmas tree and got it setup so that Sara & I could decorate it when she got home. In my defense, I was going to do it the other day, but we had new couches being delivered on Friday and space was a premium that we couldn’t afford to have the delivery guys tripping over a tree for!

But it’s up, and I like it. Didn’t put nearly as many ornaments on it as we have in the past – there’s still a ton left in the box because we keep accumulating more and more new ones every year, but at least part of the motivation was that I wanted to try having the tree up without having Cleo’s deterrent shield in place because A) I hate how it takes away from the beauty of the tree, and B) with a kid on the way, next year’s Christmas is going to have lots and lots of presents that Cleo’s just going to have to learn to leave alone!

I tried to leave her some room so that she could still look out the window on the right when anything remotely interesting happens outside, so we’ll see how that goes… 😉

Streaming Home Theater Progress

For the longest time I’ve talked about putting together a media center where all of our movies on DVD can be streamed to any TV in the house, and tonight I finally started tinkering around with exactly that!

The trickiest part has always seemed to be the front-end – it’s easy enough to shove a server full of hard drives in the corner and load movies onto it, but what do I plug into the actual TV to make it all work without having to hook up a computer itself in the living room / bedroom / nursery / whatever? Over the years I’ve read about tons of HTPC designs that are basically PCs for the living room, admittedly some nicer than others, but at the end of the day I really want the two functions separate from one another with all of the heavy lifting done out of sight, out of mind and a nice, neat little box under the TV pulling just the bare minimum.

My other priorities:

  • The interface needs to be simple – as in cable box simple. I don’t want this to be something where I have to set it up whenever anybody else wants to use it.
  • It needs to be easy to browse, and pretty, too. No directories full of video files – everything should be organized by tags and preferably use cover art and the whole nine.
  • This one might be tough, but ideally both DVDs and downloaded media via iTunes, Amazon, or whatever should be co-mingled – no having to go one place for DVDs and another for everything we’ve bought digitally.
  • The front-end needs to be lightweight enough that I can justify eventually expanding them to accompany every TV in the house. Small & quiet goes without saying…

So for a while I’ve entertained the idea of using AppleTV for that front-end. I’ve bought a decent amount of music via iTunes and I know that they’ve got a nice selection of movies and TV, and I learned that you can also share the iTunes Library of other PCs on the same network that the AppleTV is on, so it seems like a workable solution to have a server stuffed in the closet with all of our DVDs sitting in an iTunes Library that just runs in the background 24×7. I’ve honestly been stalled out on this little plan for a long time out of a lack of funds to rebuild the server itself, but when Best Buy had AppleTVs on sale for Black Friday for $85 (normally $100), we were buying some other stuff anyways so I decided to splurge and get one to toy around with!

Last night I hooked it up and a few hours later, I was streaming an old favorite across the house…

htpc_batman

“Throw me down the Bat Shark Repellent, Robin!”

The re-encoding process wasn’t too bad despite never having done it before – using a combination of MakeMKV and HandBrake, both of which are free to download and pretty simple to use. After doing a couple more overnight, I found this app called MetaX that seems to do a pretty good job of tagging videos using data from IMDB, Amazon, and other sources … I like that it not only adds genres and titles, but the actors, directors, cover art, description, and even the chapter names when it can find them – seems to have been worth the $10 I paid to register it so far!

As far as quality via the AppleTV, so far I’m super pleased, though admittedly I am a bit curious to see how Blu-Rays go for true HD resolution. Won’t be able to do anything in that realm for a bit because I don’t have any PCs that have a Blu-Ray drive, but it has raised a bit of question because in the whole re-encoding process I can sort of see the potential for keeping the video files as their full-size MKVs instead of then later re-encoding them to a quarter of their size.

At one point I stumbled upon that Kaleidoscape media server that sounds like it does basically that, though regrettably at a price point considerably out of my reach at the moment!

Of course, the hitch to keeping them as MKVs instead of MP4s is that AppleTV can’t read them, so I’d need to go another route for my front-end at that point. I did also come across this Plex thing that I’m a little curious about which says that it can do it, along with some other neat features like online streaming over the Internet, but the installer failed when I tried to install their free server on my PC, so I might have to circle back on that one later. Plus, I’m still a little unclear as to costs because they also have a subscription model, so at this point I don’t know what all that covers.

Anywho, for the time being I think I’m going to flesh out the AppleTV idea a little more just to see where that goes, what it can do and what it can’t. I did notice last night that while I had my movie playing in the living room, Sara had had a movie from Amazon Instant Download streaming in the bedroom and when I walked in, it was buffering … not a big deal, and I kind of didn’t expect the wifi to handle that much bandwidth at one time anyways, so that just means that before all is said and done I’ll probably have to wire the house for ethernet, which is something that I’ve always thought about doing anyways.

I think my next steps will simply be to get a small collection of movies encoded so that I can see how the AppleTV interface looks with more than one video in the library! A nice mix of movies from different genres, some TV shows, even a few downloaded ones, too. I’ve got a spare 1.5 TB hard drive that’s actually been laying around since I tried (and failed) to use it to extend our DVR, so I can collect them on that until I come up with something a bit more permanent.

Also, I didn’t do it yesterday with the first few, but now that I think of it it probably would be a good idea for me to save those MKVs in addition to the re-encoded M4Vs for iTunes so that in the event that I have to go another direction I don’t have to re-rip the first batch all over again.

Will keep you posted once I make some more progress!

2013 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 13 – Scott’s Awesome 2013 Holiday Gift Guide

Only 11 more shopping days left – better get to shopping!!!

xmas2013_snessoapSuper Nintendo Soap
At this point they’re only available for pre-order, so be sure to consider that, however if you were the kind of kid who would’ve bathed with your Nintendo games if you could, a little Super Mario Kart Soap-on-a-Rope might be just the scent of nostalgia that Dr. Mario ordered!
xmas2013_blockspritesBlock Sprites
Even though I’ve yet to actually buy one of these myself, I love flipping through the various photos of their creations on Facebook and dream of one day having an entire collection of the Final Fantasy IV cast from its original SNES glory up on my wall…
xmas2013_astronautAn Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth
What can I say – International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield is just cool, and countless space fans got the biggest kick out of following him during his stay this year when he would sing songs and do experiments and answer questions about how awesome it is to live in space! Now you can buy his book, too, which you totally should.
xmas2013_minifigsLego Collectible Minifigs
I love these things! They’re basically the trading cards that I wish existed when I was a kid growing up, and the fact that they’ve now got 11 series out after only 4 years proves that other people are loving ’em, too. They make great stocking stuffers – hint hint, wink wink… 😉
xmas2013_goldenHoliday Golden Books
I didn’t really realize that these were a thing until I went to order some books to include with my niece’s Christmas presents and found these ones styled after the classic claymation specials like Rudolph and Frosty! I see my house getting a whole collection of these things just like I had in the near future… 🙂
xmas2013_teaTea!
Slowly distancing myself from green teas because the taste seems to be too bitter without adding copious amounts of honey, I’ve been starting to dabble with other random flavors in hopes of finding my next addiction. Really, I’m not too picky on brands at this point – leave a comment if you’ve got others to recommend!
xmas2013_narwhalThe Avenging Narwhal Action Figure
Because I’m a true believer in the idea that ever gift guide needs one of those presents that just makes its recipient scratch their head and go, “Wha???” Not for penguin fans (sorry, Mom), I’m fairly certain that this year’s weird paperweight will definitely achieve that goal.
xmas2013_voltronDie-Cast 30th Anniversary Voltron Action Figure
Mind you, it ain’t cheap … but then again, most nostalgia for us in our thirties these days isn’t. And yet you can’t deny that this 11″ shiny metal Defender of the Universe would look just absolutely stunning on any fan’s shelf of untouchables from the past. Note that this one is also a pre-order, currently slated for next June…
xmas2013_thorneThe Internet is a Playground
This actually came out a couple of years ago, but I’ve never featured it on a gift guide before and so many of the sections are truly timeless that you owe it to anyone who appreciates fine humor to ensure that a copy resides prominently on their bookshelf.

2013 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 12 – Holiday Hobbits

I was thinking about going to see this tonight and even had the wife’s buy-in for the midnight showing, but the more I thought about it, there was just something not so fun about the prospect of getting home from a movie at 4am and then having to be awake again at 8am for work!

So goes adulthood, I suppose… 😛

Nonetheless, we are going to see it this weekend, so I’m still pretty excited about that. I actually didn’t get a chance to watch the Lord of the Rings over Thanksgiving weekend like I normally do, so I’m kind of jonesin’ for some Middle Earthean adventures at this point! I find it interesting how LOTR has sort of become a holiday memory for me – even though it was only the first two movies, I remember going to see them for the first time with my cousins after we had eaten Christmas dinner … because I guess that’s what kids do when they’re kind of grown up and don’t bring their Nintendo up to Grandma & Grandpa’s house for the holidays anymore!

says the guy who just re-hooked up his original SNES in his office… 😉

Anyways, hope it ends up being just as awesome as I’ve been anticipating … the first one was pretty good, but I’m still looking for a little something more to really lift The Hobbit up to the level of its theatrical predecessor. Will the great and powerful Smaug be the one to give LOTR a run for its trilogy?!

2013 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 11 – A Convertible Christmas

I’m not gonna lie – I honestly don’t really even put down the top in my convertible anymore … not even during the summer, save for those super hot days when it becomes painfully aware that I still haven’t fixed my stupid air conditioner. But otherwise it’s kind of a pain, and my hair gets all messed up and I end up looking like one of those troll dolls by the time I reach my destination, and this post just turned into my own little first world problem…

But nonetheless, every now and then around this time of year – even though it isn’t particularly hot out – I like to suck it up and put it down and just drive around with the top down because I can, because when it comes to weather, I’m the kind of guy who loves to gloat, and because people up north have been complaining about snow all week long!

I might miss the snow for about an hour and a half on Christmas morning, but on nights like tonight, I’ll take another 69 degree Christmas in Florida any time… 😀

customer service done simple and right… (thanks, Amazon!)

Best Buy should take a cue from Amazon – this is how customer service is supposed to work…

I e-mailed Amazon earlier this evening to follow-up on some Amazon Prime purchases that had been delivered late:

Hello,

The items listed above sent in two shipments were not received according to the Amazon Prime Guaranteed Delivery Dates:

Shipment of XYZ (and 5 other items) was guaranteed delivery on Thursday, 12/5 by Lasership, however it did not arrive until Saturday, 12/7.

Shipment of PDQ was guaranteed delivery on Friday, 12/6 by UPS, however it did not arrive until Monday, 12/9.

I subscribe to Amazon Prime specifically to take advantage of these expedited shipping times, especially during the holidays. Please advise how I will be compensated for these errors.

– Scott Sevener

And low and behold, within a matter of hoursI had a response:

Hello,

I’m sorry to hear your items didn’t arrive by the guaranteed delivery date under Prime two day shipping. This usually doesn’t happen.

To help make up for the inconvenience, I’ve extended your Amazon Prime membership by one month. The membership will now renew on October 27, 2014.

We hope to see you again soon.

Best regards,
Gopikrishnan P

See how they didn’t argue with me and hem and haw about what they could and couldn’t do, and then make me go out of my way to fix their mistake in the first place, ultimately offering no actual compensation for all of the time that I spent resolving their issue??? Their compensation has an actual value of $6.67 (one month of Prime), and yet at least they did something, and I appreciate that!

Take notes, Best Buy, because these are the guys who will actually be selling me my next TV instead of you. 😛

“Just toss it downstairs! Or out in the garage!”

photo (13)

If there’s one thing that I admittedly kind of miss about living in Northern Michigan, it’s storage space.

Pretty much every house around up there has a basement, which is basically like a whole ‘nother house underground! Not to mention my Mom’s house has a ginormous garage with lots of room to stash things, so there was never really an issue of not having enough room to put stuff when I lived up there.

I think I’ve parked in the garage of the house that we now own maybe twice, and it was mainly because we were going out of town and I really worked at it to squeeze my car in so that it didn’t have to sit outside the entire time that we were gone.

Last house I never got to park in the garage because it was laid out stupid and had shelves and a huge workbench on every wall, so my car physically couldn’t fit inside. Not that the garage door opener ever worked at that place anyways…

The house before that, where Sara & I lived for a good 3.5 years – now that was a nice garage and we both got to park inside … probably because we hadn’t been living together too long, so we hadn’t accumulated that overflow of stuff yet, and most of the junk that we did have could cram inside the closet in the spare bedroom.

In this house, said closet is still packed, and the closet in our bedroom, and there’s still a bunch of crap in our family room that has yet to find a home, and … well, see above picture for further examples!!!

I feel like every new place that we move into has less and less storage space, although it’s probably just that the longer we’re together, the more stuff we’re accumulating, be it tools, or pool toys, or pictures for the walls. Granted, right at this moment we also have a bunch of my sister-in-law’s stuff out in our garage because she currently lives with us, and that takes up a little corner of space, too, but I was out there this evening trying to get to the Christmas lights … and I never actually did because I spent all of my time wading through piles and filling up the garbage can with the latest candidates for that big trash heap in the sky!

I’m thinking about finding a few things to maybe stash up in the attic because apparently we have one of those now, even though admittedly I’m not all too keep about going up there … but maybe just some basic stuff that we’ll likely never need, like a bunch of the closet doors that we’ve removed from several rooms to make the closets easier to access – don’t really need those until if/when we ever sell the place again.

I’m sure there’s honestly a ton more that could ultimately just be thrown out altogether – do I really still need my old VCR, or even the CD player that came with my home theater system that technically isn’t even setup right now because I’d just as soon replace it with something newer and more compact that actually has enough inputs for all of my toys these days???

I’ve also got a whole bag full of diving gear out there that even if I do ever find my way back into that hobby again and manage to lose enough weight to reasonably sink to the bottom of the sea, there ain’t no way in hell that I’m ever fitting into the same wet suit that I wore when I was 17, so why am I even keeping that thing?!

There’s also an old CRT monitor out there that I used to use with my home server that hasn’t lived in years, there’s the kiddie pool for Cleo that we bought her for her birthday last year and now have no reasonable place to put it, lots of paint cans in various shapes and sizes and colors of which many are probably empty and can get pitched, a couple of old fish tanks of varying sizes, some replacement fence boards that I guess I forgot to nail up, a very rugged travel case full of microphones and cables from my PA system that’s still up in Michigan and I’m not really sure how just it found its way down here, two SCUBA tanks that might still be good because being overweight doesn’t impact an aluminum tank, although they’re very old and definitely need to be re-tested … the list goes on…

LOL – so maybe I’m looking at this “problem” wrong and instead of finding more space to store crap, maybe I just need to learn to better manage my crap and get rid of scads of stuff that I haven’t fit into or turned on or hung on my walls in half a decade or more!

Bleh.  😕

2013 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 10 – 23 Days of Disney Christmas (from D23.com)

I honestly almost didn’t want to use this one because the D23 online experience has been pretty terrible for me so far between first ordering a free membership via DisneyStore.com and having to wait 24 hours before being able to use it and then super-aggressive password rules that I wouldn’t have been able to remember if they hadn’t immediately e-mailed my password to me as soon as I created it…

…but…

…in the spirit of the season, if you can ever actually get logged into their website, this series that they’re posting through Christmas is kind of neat. They’ve tasked 23 different artists from departments around The Disney Company with creating a holiday scene featuring their favorite characters – everything from Snow White, Cinderella, Monster’s Inc., Toy Story, and more!

I wish that I could point to a couple of my favorites here more easily, but between being behind their (free) pay wall and not being link-friendly, the site continues what I eluded to above. If you actually go through the hassle of registering, though, I really liked Zurg’s Present (Ricky D. Taylor Jr – Disney Interactive), Mickey & Pluto’s Christmas (Brian Blackmore – Theme Park Merchandise), and the one you see below.

Apparently you can also register to win a lithograph of one of the pieces, if you’re into that sort of thing.

P.S. You can also download the ones you like as wallpaper for your PC, though you do need to be logged in to access that link, too.  🙄

50+ Free Guys in Super Mario World!!!

…because apparently I’m writing to you today from 1992! 😛

Having a rough time with the Ghost House in the Chocolate World this evening (these names are making me hungry!), and after burning through over a dozen lives in a relatively short period of time, I started to get a little worried that I was going to blow the stockpile that I’ve built up over the last two days of playing!

So I went and found this video, and now all is well again… 😀

The trick is in Vanilla Secret 2 and basically you use a P-Block to turn all of the enemies to coins, then make a mad dash back to the start of the level where there are a ton of winged koopa troopers all in a row!

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding:

How did we ever play these things without the Internet back then??? 😯
