A little food porn from last night … went over to Disney and ended up taking in a movie at the AMC Dine-In Theatre at Downtown Disney. The move itself doesn’t really matter because a) it was pretty horrible, and b) we were literally stuck in the worst possible seats – the front row. But hey, it beat trying to run around theme parks in the rain and bonus – OMG the food at that place is always so delicious!!!

Dream Journal : The Shooting

It was an academic setting, though I was unclear if I was in high school or college. But I was in a classroom of some sort, and we were divided up into large groups of maybe 8-10 people.

Out of nowhere, shots were fired.

It wasn’t another student, although the identity of the shooter(s) wasn’t clear. Everyone froze, and without warning several students were killed – all were members of my group.

For some reason it became clear that only people in my group were at danger, though there really wasn’t any context to identify why we had been singled out.

While the shooter(s) were distracted threatening another student, someone near the door took off running, and I followed shortly thereafter. A moment later, the halls were filled with panic and I could feel somebody chasing the both of us, but we both kept pushing through the crowds to put as much distance between us and them as possible.

At one point I pushed myself past a girl in my class whose Mom was an administrator – maybe the principal? – at the school, and she was muttering that she just didn’t know what to do. I remember physically pushing her down the hall and yelling that she had to go tell her Mom so that everyone could be warned.

Later when the chase continued outside, I got the feeling that the principal had “sold us out” to the shooter(s), who said that if they could finish what they had come there to do, nobody else would get hurt. Nice.

It wasn’t until we got outside that I began to realize that this was some sort of professional job – there were many more shooters outside, along with laser grids tracking our movements and pointing us out to the people with the guns. Somehow missiles eventually entered into the equation, and I guess I decided that it was finally time to fight back because in one of my sprints around the common area, I knocked a guard out and stole the remote control that he had been using, then redirected one of the missiles to explode where a bunch of the new shooters had been standing.

It was shortly after I gained the upper hand that I woke up.

First thought upon waking up – what in the hell kind of dream was THAT?! 😯

George Zimmerman Acquitted

I don’t want to think about this case anymore.

It’s like despite all of the circus around choosing a jury, they still managed to handpick a jury of all women who somehow found themselves relating more to the assailant than the victim. Those women didn’t see Trayvon as their own son – they saw George Zimmerman as the son or close friend that just got caught up in a bad situation and needed their help.

One even plans to write A BOOK about the trial … just an “observational” book, though, so that should be fine!

W.T.F.???

This is the last thing that I can watch about this case – it’s an interview from a year ago where Zimmerman cites that he has no regrets about his actions that evening, and that it was “God’s plan” for the events that transpired that ultimately led to the death of 17 year-old kid in his hands.

Bullshit.

The Student Debt Crisis

I watched this earlier this morning and I’ve got to say, long-term I think that it’s one of the bigger problems that we face as a nation when we’re talking about prosperity and economic recovery because needless to say, running up big college bills + not finding a job upon graduation = BAD!!!

It’s important that we address all of the facets of the problem because if we focus in on just one like student loan interest, the system is still going to fail anyways. It’s easier to just talk about “fixing” loan rates without actually addressing the ancillary issues like the stickiness compared to other kinds of debt or the fact that they’re given out to just about anyone with a co-signer. The recent legislation that Congress is patting itself on the back for is a great example of this – sure, they dropped interest rates … sort of … but what’s to stop tuition rates from continuing to skyrocket, or people from getting in over their heads when they realize firsthand just how much the current job market sucks – not just for new grads, but for everybody!

Much like healthcare, I’m really not sure how we get to where we need to be without drastic changes that probably would never fly in our society, but it’s an important quandary to think about when you consider that the average college student now leaves school with $26,600 in debts, and yet when we talk about the alternative of whether or not kids really need to go to college, the answer from the job market is that they need to go to college more than ever in order to be competitive!

We need a better way for kids to get higher education without committing themselves to such outrageous financial ties before they even have any idea what their first paycheck might be … you’d never buy a house or a car by saying, “I don’t make any money now, but in four years, I’ll definitely be bringing in $45,000 a year!” And yet that’s what we do with student loans today, and even the ones who are lucky enough to score that sweet right out of college will find that it’s quite the buzz kill when they finally do the math and realize that unless they accelerate that payment plan that they’re just now getting used to, they can expect to be making them for more than a decade after they’ve graduated if they just stick to the minimums that show up on their statements each month.

Ouch.  😳

The Newsroom, season 2

It won’ t be long now!!!  😀

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McVXNEdi8K4

It’s no secret that I was a big fan of the last season of HBO’s The Newsroom, both for its entertainment value and also simply because I felt like it highlighted a lot of issues with American journalism that I think we deserve better of. And a lot of times that ends up being the mark of great TV – when it serves a dual purpose to both entertain and enlighten its audience at the same time.

I’ve been flipping back through some clips from last season … it’s certainly going to be a tough one to top. Of course, this is one of my favorites – I sure hope whoever is in charge of coordinating the music with the script came back for season 2 because this was a great pairing…

Dream Journal : Island in the Clouds

So I was on a cruise with a bunch of people I knew from high school … it might’ve even been a class trip or something.

Anyways, we had docked at this island that was incredibly small. I never really got an idea of how big the boat was, but the island was very, very small. We had docked at the island itself, but they had to put these big, inflatable bumpers in the water to keep the boat from hitting the rocks.

But we all got off, thinking that we weren’t going to be there very long, and soon I just found myself walking down a trail in some random direction – I think because I had to go to the bathroom! It was clear that I wasn’t going to find a bathroom as I headed deeper into the island, though, and eventually I just kept on walking for the sake of exploring, as opposed to a more animalistic urge…

As a side note, for some reason I also had this kind of overhead, Google Maps-y view of where I was on the island, and I could see as I kept walking I started to see the shoreline on one side, and then eventually it became closer on the other side as well until I saw myself approaching some sort of cliff.

Walking up to the little clearing at the edge of the cliff, I saw one of the most beautiful views that I had ever seen.

Apparently I had unknowingly been walking uphill because the clearing didn’t just look out onto the water, but onto the rest of the island, and there were all sorts of little houses with red roofs, but what was strange was that clouds intermingled among the rooftops as if we were floating up very high in the air. You could still see the water down below, but it was just the most amazing sight and so I pulled out my camera phone to try and take some pictures.

Unfortunately, I only had one of those super-old Nokia candy bar phones … which in reality didn’t even have a camera! … and I did what I could with it, but it took really lousy photos that in no way did the view justice and I wanted something better. Looking at the time and considering how long it had taken me to walk there, I figured it wouldn’t be any trouble to walk back to the ship to get my regular camera and come back. I could even grab some of my friends to share with them this little hidden gem on a seemingly otherwise bland-looking cruise stop.

Sadly, as I began to walk back to the ship is also about the time when I began to wake up, so I never did get those pictures … but at least I still have memories of the view. 😉
