2011 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 11 – Scott’s Awesome Holiday Gift Guide

I did one of these last year over on my humor site and it ended up being a lot of fun, so I figured why not take another pass at it and compile a new list with my awesome gift-giving recommendations for 2011?!

Here’s what I was able to come up with…

Jim’s Pancakes – THE BOOK!
It started as just a blog where he would post pictures of the awesome pancakes that he made for his 3 year-old daughter, but as with so many other great blogs, you can now own your very own copy in a convenient paper, gift-ready form, too.
LEGO Dino Sets
These are technically on the release schedule for next year, but it looks like you can start to find them now if you’re lucky. Where else are you going to find raptors and even a tyrannosaurus rex made out of Legos?!
The Simpsons: Season 14
It seems like DVD releases of The Simpsons have really been at a crawl lately, but you know that the other 13 seasons already on your shelf would just feel lonely if you didn’t add this latest set featuring the likes of Kodos and Kang on the cover to your collection.
Mario Kart K’Nex
My sister got me into these for my birthday earlier this year, and I eventually blogged about all of the really cool track pieces that they have out. I still wish that they were officially LEGOs instead of the knock-off K’Nex brand, but they’re still really cool and my wife & I still plan on one day building a track that encircles our entire house!
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Full disclosure – I haven’t actually played this game yet, but if it’s half as cool as the trailer and Penny Arcade-drawn comic strip would lead us to believe, then it should make for a fine Christmas gift from my perspective!
shirt.woot!
I got turned onto this site last month when somebody tipped me off to this awesome pumpkin shirt that has now taken up residence in my closet. The concept is simple – they post a new shirt design every day, but only the most popular ones remain. Best to order as soon as you discover something cool, so as to not miss out on a gem like this as I recently did…
USB Missile Launcher
Sometimes working in a cubical farm can be war, so as they say, sometimes the best defensive is a laser-guided missile launcher! I’ve always been curious about these USB gadgets and gizmos that ThinkGeek and other similar toy shacks offer … do they actually work or are these missiles purely to see if anyone will call your bluff?
Popcornopolis!
Honestly, I just love the name of this place, but their incredible selection of gourmet popcorn flavors is admittedly pretty awesome, too. Jalapeno Cheddar, Cinnamon Toast, Candy Cane Crunch, White Chocolate Pumpkin Spice – the list truly goes on and on until you find yourself in need of a towel to wipe off your keyboard!
Movie Tickets to See The Muppets
Lord knows they should’ve already seen it anyways, but if by some freak chance your gift recipient hasn’t yet seen the most delightful movie of 2011, you owe it to them to ensure their attendance by making the tickets their one and only gift from you this year! Also, you might want to go along with them – you know, just to make sure that they’re ok…
My New Book?
Oh, wait – it’s actually not quite finished yet, so I guess that won’t really work. Then again, you could always take this time to pick up one of my older books, I suppose…

Boy, this is kind of embarrassing – new book to come very shortly in 2012, though … I promise! 😉

The Five-Year Engagement

So now that The Muppets is officially in the can, I guess that this is the next movie that Jason Segel is doing…

At this point I’m not quite sure what to think of it – I’ve never really seen much of Emily Blunt, so not sure what to think there … although I do find it interesting that she seems to be the brunt of a lot of physical comedy throughout the trailer. This is also one of the more romantic-comedy-esque movies that he’s starred in – the next closest that I can recall from his filmography was Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which is one of my favorite comedies of all-time, so that’s a tough bar to beat.

For what it’s worth, though, this is another movie that Jason has written himself – in fact, co-written with Nicholas Stoller, the guy who he just finished The Muppets with, so who knows – maybe this one will surprise us! Due out next April, so we shall see…

2011 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 10 – Child’s Play Charity

Anyone who knows me knows that Child’s Play is probably my #1 favorite charity of all-time.

And I mean that with all of the sincerity in my heart – not only does it serve the noble deed of making life a little more bearable for sick kids while they’re in the hospital, but there’s also that added perk of proving to society that those who appreciate video games aren’t really the homicidal zombies that politicians and the media all-too-often would make us out to be! 😉

One thing that I really look forward to this time of year is picking out the games and toys off of our nearest hospital’s wishlist to donate. Some day I’d love to be in a position to be the guy who gives an entire Wii or Xbox 360 all by myself, but in the meantime what’s cool is that everybody just does whatever they can and as a result each year millions of dollars in toys are donated to children’s hospitals around the entire world!

Last year for 2010, the final total raised was $2,294,317.

The grand total raised since 2003 has been a mind boggling $10,223,564, and yet we’re already up over $1.5 million here in 2011!

I say we because this is what being part of a community feels like – thousands of complete strangers banding together for the greater good, and frankly, I can’t think of a better time a year for us to do our thing.

An Occupy Update…

So I haven’t really posted much about Occupy Wall Street in the last month, partially because news “coverage” in generally seemed to get increasingly misguided and depressing, and partially because honestly I kind of lost interest and found myself buried under a pile of my own work that I needed to focus on.

…and yet ironically enough, that’s the exact same concern that I’m worried will happen to Occupy on a mass level!

The thing is, what’s somewhat sad about this country – myself certainly included to varying degrees – is that in general, we’re a society that feeds off of sound bites and as a result, it’s kind of uncommon for many issues to stay in the American spotlight for more than a week or so. And while OWS most certainly kept people’s attentions for significantly longer than most, it still begs to question as we move into the third running month of the movement whether most people even care anymore despite whatever turnouts are still present around the country.

To one extent it’s kind of frustrating because if I think back to some of the other major news stories that we saw over the last year – WikiLeaks, harassment by the TSA, government budget issues – most of them aren’t really heard from anymore, and as far as I can tell, it’s not so much because any of them actually got resolved. WikiLeaks sort of faded into the background, despite continuing to operate and battle legal fights for both its founder and one of its biggest sources, the TSA continues to flat-out deny any and all claims to its violations of personal space, and even just recently the congressional super committee established solely for the purpose of avoiding default across the board cuts failed at exactly that, despite what I can only assume would be a lot of pressure to actually do their job correctly to rescue the nation from financial turmoil!

I guess what makes me particularly concerned about Occupy Wall Street in this regard then is simply because if it too just dwindles out of the public eye with little to no resolution but for a brief mention in whatever history books choose to tell it, essentially nothing changes and those who were actually responsible for what OWS is protesting will continue to rape and pillage profits off of Americans’ backs until somebody or something does finally make them stop. Occupy Wall Street felt like it had that kind of potential, and yet where are the politicians stepping up to say that lobbyists have no place in American politics? Where are the law enforcement officials who are leaving their posts and refusing to arrest or bring harm to these people who are asking the questions that need to be asked? Where are the businessmen vilifying their own who take advantage of those naive among us who just don’t know any better and possibly even still don’t?!

These protests have brought forth plenty of people to point out the flaws, but where are the next flanks who will step up to do what’s right to actually close those loopholes and make a historic action to get America back on track? Are those people even among us, or have we all already changed gears to get ourselves ready for the holidays, ever-oblivious to the problems we face that don’t just magically go away if we’re ready to move on without really ever dealing with them??

Or even more simply put, how does one incite real change for a society that greatly needs it when it also happens to have the collective attention span of a 5 year-old child???

2011 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 9 – Animal’s Holiday Guide

You may have noticed that I’ve been on a little bit of a Muppet kick after seeing the new movie earlier this week, so it seemed awesomely convenient when Disney released today’s clip just in time for me to feature it in today’s holiday post! 🙂

Once again, I just can’t reiterate enough how much I enjoyed this movie, so if you want to get but one gift for yourself this holiday season, go and see this movie and I can pretty much guarantee that if you grew up loving the Muppets just as much as I did, it’s the kind of movie that’s bound to put a spring in your step and make the rest of your days even brighter…

The Muppets Take Walt Disney World

This one is another little treat that I found over at the Progress City, USA blog, and it dates back to 1990 just days before Jim Henson passed away. I vaguely remember this when it first aired – I was probably only ten years old at the time, but we specifically subscribed to The Disney Channel (back when you picked channels individually!) so it would probably be a safe bet that we caught it at some point! What was particularly interesting re-watching it to me was that although they spent time at the Disney-MGM Studios, their own attraction hadn’t technically been built yet.

It definitely makes you wonder how much different Hollywood Studios would look today had Disney actually completed their purchase of the Muppets back in the ’90s instead of more than a decade later – it seems like areas of the park dedicated to the Pixar, Disney, and Muppet Studios would’ve been a pretty cool direction for that park to take!

Still, you never know – if Kermit & the Gang can make enough of a splash with their new movie to truly get them back on their owner’s radar, maybe someday… 😉

Thin Post : So Cold…

I hate it when it gets this cold out because it can be really hard to keep motivated … well, pretty much in every aspect, but for now we’ll just focus on exercise… 😉

We got hit with a bit of a cold snap here in Florida the last couple of days. I know that a lot of people equate The Sunshine State with having perpetual warmth and awesome weather, but the months of December-February can sometimes be a little chilly – last winter was especially brutal. Anyways, my point is that if anything when it gets chilly like this – dropping well below 60 in the evenings, it can be particularly hard to want to go out and walk like I’ve been doing because I’d much rather just bundle up in a blanket on the couch and ride it out the old fashion way!

Trouble is, very few people have ever been able to lose weight from the comfort of their own couches – trust me, I tried this myself unsuccessfully for many a year!

I’ve tried to be as prepared as I can for this kind of thing by having some long-sleeve shirts and workout pants to don once it gets beyond t-shirt and shorts weather, but last night it was so cold that only layers would’ve gotten me through it and instead, I ended up just falling asleep early and not doing anything at all. Tonight I made a more conscious effort to go out and clock my 3.5 miles – a good part of it because Cleo has been really acting up lately when she doesn’t walk on a regular basis, which I suppose ultimately is still good because really whatever gets me out the door is fine as long as I go.

Still, it’s certainly not going to hurt my feelings when the weather finally decides to warm up just a bit hopefully in the next couple of days, either!

2011 Holiday Advent Blog – Day 8 – Angry Birds Seasons!

It never ceases to amaze me how much content I’ve gotten out of this $2.99 app purchase! Whereas they could easily charge separately for each add-on pack, instead three bucks gets new levels updated for all of the major holidays throughout the year – right now I’ve got an entire year’s worth of seasonal fun from 2011, and now they just released a new holiday edition for 2012. There’s a reason that folks are going gaga over these birds!

My one and only complaint is that the newer levels always seem to be too hard for me! I’ll play the same level for 10 minutes before I finally get frustrated and give up, whereas I played the original levels literally for hours on end. Still, I suppose you can only build so many easy levels before you need to ramp it up a bit, anyways, and again, the updates are free, aren’t they?!

TL;DR – If anyone can tell me how to get past the first level in Wreck the Halls, please have a heart and help a brother out… 😉

Goodbye, Shoes

So apparently I need to buy a new pair of shoes…

I know that I can’t complain too much because when you compare the ratio of Shoes Lost to Cleo between my wife and I, she’s still had many a more sacrifice than I have … the only difference is, I don’t have nearly as many alternate shoe options as she does!!! I basically only have two pairs of shoes – a dress pair and a pair of tennis shoes, and then also a pair of flip-flops that I don’t really like anyways, but bought as a replacement when Cleo destroyed the pair that I did like. Plus, it doesn’t help that I’m kinda picky when it comes to buying shoes for myself – if I had the money to buy several reserve pairs in advance when I finally found something that I liked, I’d have worn the same style of shoes for the last 10 years!

What sucks right now was that as of this morning, even my backup pair of shoes has a hole in it – dress shoes, as you can see, are pretty much toast, but about a week ago she got a hold of one of my tennis shoes and chewed a hole in the toe, which so far I’ve just been wearing anyways because it’s been at night when there’s no one but me to know about the hole, anyways. I do have to make more of a conscious effort to avoid puddles, though.

Just how I wanted to spend my already busy Thursday night – shoe shopping!
