The Hunger Games: Catching Fire … movie thoughts

MV5BMTAyMjQ3OTAxMzNeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDU0NzA1MzAx._V1_SX214_[1]I guess I’m not what you’d call a patient man.

Case in point – after gleaning as much as I could from my wife and her sister on the ride home about what happens next because they’ve both read all of the books, ultimately I ended up turning to Wikipedia to figure out how this whole thing is supposed to wrap up because I definitely don’t see myself waiting out another two years for them to break the final installment into two movies, as is the current trend!

*** SPOILERS, ETC, ETC… ***

So anyways, I liked the first Hunger Games movie. I thought by itself it was really well-done, and amid lots of controversial imagery, it really made a star out of Jennifer Lawrence who seems to really deserve it.

I really had no idea what to expect going into this movie – believe it or not, despite all three of us really looking forward to it, I didn’t do a whole lot of cheating since the last installment … didn’t read the books, didn’t read Wikipedia, and I don’t think that I ever even saw the trailer for Catching Fire, which is kind of surprising. I guess I was curious as to how they were going to shape the whole thing because you know the old saying, “Fool me once into fighting children to the death, shame on you; fool me twice into fighting children to the death, shame on me!”

I was definitely intrigued and encouraged when I saw the vibe of more rebellion beginning to rise as Katniss begins to realize the true impact that her actions had on the people in the last games. Though in a way it kind of made me wonder … if the entire group of tributes didn’t want to have to fight again, hence the holding hands scene during the pre-show, couldn’t they all just say, “Fuck you – we’re not doing it.” on national television and cause an uprising right there??? Instead, they’re like, “We don’t want to fight again, but if we don’t have a choice, then I guess we will…” and it becomes hard to see where this “uprising” is supposed to take place if these heroes don’t just start to rebel when the whole world is watching.

But I don’t know – maybe it’s not as simple as that. Just like a bit earlier than that when Katniss runs in front of Gale getting whipped, what I was hoping for was to see the guard get his ass whooped for defacing the winner of the last games … but then again, I guess President Snow tolerates her but he really doesn’t like her, so allowing even the winner to get roughed up a little kind of helps to advance their goal of oppression and whatnot.

I think the other thing that didn’t really click for me was how Katniss was so much more open to killing her opponents in this game – I mean, right off the bat she shoots one in the opening of the games, and then she has to think long and hard before plucking off another … seems odd when you consider that pretty much all of her kills in the first game are incidental, except for the one who approaches after Rue dies, which makes sense because she was enraged by that point. I guess it just seemed a little bit forced to me, as if it was important for the story for her to be more aggressive and show her true side like the President wanted, whereas that very much wasn’t her in the first movie.

And then the last scene really threw me off because I didn’t entirely catch what all had happened until I went back and read the Wikipedia entry for the book. For example, I thought that Johanna was simply saving Katniss by making it look like she was already dead … I didn’t realize that what she actually was doing was removing her tracker in preparation for the escape. It also wasn’t super clear what had happened with Beetee – she leaves and he has Peeta and Finnick guarding him, she comes back and they’re both gone and he’s dead. Maybe it just went by too quick that I didn’t catch some stuff, but apparently Peeta got captured and Finnick somehow got up to the rescue ship … and I guess Beetee, too?

All I know is that I was a little bummed when it all ended. I thought it was going to be even worse, with Katniss opening her eyes literally right before the credits rolled, but even revealing that she hadn’t been captured by the Capital and that instead the true rebellion was now beginning (again), I definitely would’ve liked more … which I suppose is the whole point of a good cliffhanger, but still!

From what I’ve read now online, it sounds like the next one(s) could really be anybody’s game – no more Hunger Games themselves, this time focusing instead on the actual rebellion and fighting and Katniss trying to save Peeta, even though she probably won’t have gotten over Gale by then anyways … that’s the other thing that I didn’t really like, how the first twenty minutes of this movie was just Katniss pining over boys! Like seriously, your life is shit and the world is shit and the government is oppressing the masses, and yet you’ve got time to pine over two boys?! Come on, just because Twilight did it doesn’t mean that you have to, too.

Now let’s see if I remember any of this another year from now when part 1 of the last book comes out!

Man, I really wish that they’d stop doing that … and Part 2 isn’t even set for the next spring, like they at least had the decency to do with Harry Potter… 🙁

Black Thursday/Friday/Whatever In Review

So I did it. I went out for Black Friday shopping last night.

Well, sort of…

After we ate last night, the whole family ended up going out for a bit of the madness, and admittedly it was kind of fun! For what it’s worth, we did leave pretty late – we probably didn’t even show up at Best Buy until around 10pm, so it’s not like the whole adventure impacted dinner … if anything, it provided a much needed break in between dinner and dessert, actually! 😉

Anyways, a couple of thoughts about Black Friday:

#1 – I think that it sort of gets a bad rap … sort of.

I mean, don’t get me wrong – trampling is bad and if you’re one of those people who’ve been caught on tape being crazy, then you’re an asshole and you need to re-evaluate just how much a $5.99 DVD player is really worth to you.

But crazies aside, I do think that Black Friday serves a greater purpose because it gives people a chance to stretch their dollars farther in order to get more presents for the people that they care about. I’ve heard of many people who feel that they have to go shopping on Black Friday because it’s the only way that they can get things for all of their kids, or that Black Friday is how they’re able to justify getting that one big gift for the whole family like a new TV or a computer or something.

And I have no desire to get into a debate about the true meaning of Christmas, be it biblical or simply just not focused on presents, presents, and more presents.

I personally celebrate the commercial spirit of the season, and Black Friday allows that to flourish a bit more than usual, so if you have a problem with that, blame the economy, not people who go out shopping in the middle of the night in order to fill their kids’ wishlists that year…

Now that said, #2 – I also think that the slow creep of start times is getting kind of ridiculous.

This year a lot of the sales started at 6pm on Thanksgiving, which as far as I’m concerned is still prime turkey eating time! Now luckily it kind of worked out for us because we had little desire to be there the second the doors opened (aka Crazy Time), so heading in at 10pm gave us time to finish dinner and play a game of cards before heading out, and by then the initial crazy had pretty much died down when we walked into Best Buy. There were still a lot of people inside, but the line outside was like 10 people deep for some XBox One promo or something, so it wasn’t too bad.

Ultimately our excursion only took us to 2/3 stores – Best Buy and Toys ‘R Us/Babies ‘R Us – and we were back home by something like 1am, but I still feel for all of the retail workers that had to go in super-early or miss Thanksgiving entirely in order to support Black Friday and I kind of wish that there was at least a little sentiment that Thanksgiving Day Proper be left to family and then maybe sales kicked up at midnight or 5am the next morning or something.

As it was, the TV that I wanted from Best Buy had been on sale all week and the guy cited that only one model was even going to have tickets – the rest we could come in and get any time, and if they were out, they could order them for us at the same price. In fact, my whole take was honestly pretty simple and didn’t require much going out of my way whatsoever…

  • AppleTV – I’ve wanted to play around with one of these things for a while to see about finally setting up a home media server and Best Buy had them for 15% off, so I logged onto BestBuy.com shortly after 6pm and ordered it no problem.
  • 2nd Desktop Monitor – They also had a monitor similar to the one I use now on sale for $99, so I ordered this at the same time as a predetermined Christmas gift from the wife.
  • New TV for Bedroom – This was the only one that posed the slightest challenge because it sold out online and they didn’t have any in the store because apparently they don’t even stock the model I want in the store! That said, I went up to customer service and asked about it, and somehow they were able to put one on order for me anyways that will be here sometime next week!
  • Misc. Toys & Baby Stuff – Honestly, Toys & Babies ‘R Us were basically dead by the time we showed up and it was more a chance to point out some of the stuff on our baby registry to family than snag any huge deals. We still grabbed a few random things anyways – a couple of kid gifts, a few things for the baby, and a couple of Wii games for us just because they had Mario Galaxy 2 for $30 and we didn’t have it yet. Sadly, Toys ‘R Us is typically kind of overpriced anyways, so nothing monumental here, but I still like walking through there because toys are fun, and as an added bonus, it’s always amusing to listen to parents go, “What the hell is a Skylander?! I don’t know – I think he wants the blue one…”

Not sure if we’ll stumble out to any other stores for sales throughout the weekend. My main point of interest at this point would be Legos, and most of the Lego sales are crap this year. We used to scan all of the cheap DVD sales, but I’ve been trying to steer us more digital anyways and we never even bothered to unpack our DVDs from when we moved last summer to boot! Maybe we’ll go looking for some decorations, though … trying to get the abode a bit more whimsical on account of soon having a child to celebrate Christmas with us, so that’s probably a pretty good excuse for lights and garlands and all sorts of Christmas whimsy spending around here!

Because apparently I’ve turned into Martha Stewart now.

Whatever. Say what you will, but the bitch knows how to build a centerpiece that will put your grandmother’s to shame. To shame!!! 😯

Thanksgiving, The Feast … 2013 Edition

SO MUCH FOOD!!! We’re going to be eating turkey and sweet potatoes and butter shaped like turkeys for weeks! 😯

P.S. I got to carve my very first turkey that didn’t come pre-sliced by the HoneyBaked Ham store, so that was pretty cool!

And lastly, The 2013 Toast:

“For good food, for good health, and for the little baby boy who will be joining us around the table at this time next year…”

a new ultrasound for Thanksgiving Eve!

It took an extra day to work out the logistics of today’s appointment, but this morning went in for our first high risk ultrasound, and not only everything check out a-ok, but it was actually pretty cool! Unfortunately we didn’t get a ton of good pictures – just a few that the technician let me photograph off the ultrasound machine when we were done – but it was really neat to watch this more in depth inspection as she took measurements of our baby boy pretty much from head to toe, took a few glimpses of the blood flow through the umbilical cord, looked at the spine to make sure that it was straight and intact, and even showed us the two halves of his developing brain. 🙂

All in all, it was a pretty neat precursor to Thanksgiving and makes me look forward to the next one, when we’ll be taking an in depth look at the heart to make sure that it’s developing properly, all the more. That appointment, coincidentally, is on none other than Christmas Eve, so that should add an interesting twist of holiday joy to the day, too.

As blurry as they are, here are a couple of the shots that I liked the best…

We all agreed that this one looks like he’s waving hello! With his little, itty-bitty hand!!!

Nice full picture of his head and torso … crazy to think that just three weeks ago he was barely a speck!

Just kidding – it’s my own kid and I still think that these 4D ultrasounds are creepy as all get-out! The doctor did say that as he gets closer to birth, he’ll start to look more … human, but in the meantime, if that isn’t a little devil face, I don’t know what one is…  😯

Frog Blog!

Spotted this little fella hanging out on the patio door this evening! Cleo got a little jealous and wanted to spook him away, but I was lucky to snag a couple of quick shots before she made enough noise to scare him off… 😉

the new Muppets trailer…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enf9eAQ8srw

I don’t know exactly what I think about this.

Well, I guess so far it’s precisely two things:

  1. Yay – another Muppet movie! They really are back this time!!!
  2. Wait a minute – didn’t I already see this movie back in the ’80s???

It’s already been said that Jason Segel is not involved with this one – I guess he kinda dove in headfirst with The Muppets a few years ago and that was enough. And I don’t necessarily blame him – he managed to pull off a really great movie, so do you really want to tarnish that by gunning for a sequel and then having to watch it fall short?

Notice how he wasn’t exactly in this piece of crap, either. Smart guy.

So who knows … I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Tina Fey is cool, and apparently Bret McKenzie is doing the music again, but even the last movie had bad Muppets masquerading as regular Muppets, so I feel like that concept might be getting old already.

Seriously, I know that Muppets in Space didn’t do so hot, and the movie spoofs like Christmas Carol and Wizard of Oz have been kind of hit and miss, but is it that hard to come up with new, original storylines for these guys??? They used to do a brand new, half hour variety show with these characters every single week!  😐

Acoustic Renaissance

Earlier this year I very randomly backed a music project for a guitarist that I first stumbled across online a long time ago. I have a feeling that a lot of people got turned on to him by finding the same amazing video that I’m linking below…

I was kind of surprised when his new CD finally showed up in my mailbox earlier this month – admittedly I’d completely forgotten about it until an envelope postmarked from across the pond appeared, and even then I think it took me another week or so to finally pop it into the CD player in my car. Music isn’t really as big of a thing in my life as it was when I was growing up, I guess probably because this whole Internet thing barely existed at that point, but it’s kind of cool how the two have sort of bridged the gap between each other and nowadays when I do find somebody new whose music I want to hear more of, most often it’s because I somehow discovered them online.

Anyways, I think what I like about Jon Gomm’s music is the classical influence – it reminds me of some of the great guitar players that I stumbled across once I really got into playing in my late teens like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. I went through a period shortly after graduating high school when I almost exclusively listened to acoustic music – both instrumental pieces like these as well as acoustic versions of more popular music. Even looking back, there are a bunch that I like the acoustic versions more than their electric counterparts, possibly because I still have the feeling that if I ever were to get back into playing guitar again, I would probably just stick to the acoustic as opposed to having gigantic amps and pedals and tons of money tied up in equipment that will get me nothing but noise violations from my HOA here in suburbia!

IT’S A BOY!!!!!

Saw our little guy wiggling around in there and verified that indeed he is, in fact, a guy! Which is probably in my best interests because I’m currently up to G in the boys section of the baby name book and I’d hate to have to start all over because I picked the wrong gender…

It’s time to learn this very, very young, my son, that your Dad is an extraordinarily lazy man.  😉

Fortunately, he’s still good for a few things because he spent some time this afternoon beefing up on a few Sesame Street videos in preparation of the bajillions of hours that we’ll spend watching the likes of Big Bird and Oscar and Cookie Monster together!

Because I learned much of my wisdom from these fair monsters, and now it is time to pass their knowledge down … to you … one letter and one number at a time.
