movie thoughts … Elysium

MV5BNDc2NjU0MTcwNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjg4MDg2OQ@@._V1_SX214_[1]I don’t know why I was looking forward to seeing this movie.

Maybe it was because I like Matt Damon.

Or maybe it was because on the surface it seemed like an intriguing concept, mingling life in space with current income inequality issues that we face today.

It might still be an intriguing concept if somebody wants to write an actual movie about this dystopian, impoverished planet and why all of the well-to-do folks decided to leave the lesser folks behind in favor of living in a giant space station in orbit … at least it seems like the opportunity to do so should still be there because *I* certainly didn’t see anything in resemblance to a plot in this 109-minute waste of my time this evening!

So many unanswered questions…

  • Why did the rich folks build Elysium? And seriously, a little more context then “to preserve their way of life” … like, what happened that made Earth such a shit hole that they all wanted to leave???
  • And once they left, why didn’t they all just, errrr, leave for good and never look back?! What’s the point of them hanging around out in orbit, just begging the lesser folk to try to sneak in so that they can send them back home to build more robots for the sake of policing … themselves???
  • If the rich folks could build these sweet med pods that can heal anything and everything in a matter of seconds, are they just gigantic dicks for not wanting to share that technology with the rest of the population? I mean, I’ve got to figure that the kind of healing capabilities that they commanded should’ve been able to turn around a destitute civilization in no time flat.
  • And if illegal immigrants are such a concern, why doesn’t Elysium just blast every unauthorized approaching ship with missiles and call it a day? How much legitimate traffic can really be going back and forth between shit hole and utopia that they can’t have a more automated defense system?
  • And lastly, for the sake of there being a lastly, does Elysium have no backup plan if their computer systems – that seem to run everything – somehow find themselves compromised?! Literally it’s just hacker … blah blah blah … reboot the system … lights go out, then come back on … then no more exclusion – everybody is now welcome, even though we don’t have the houses or the resources and you all still smell kinda funky!

I feel like the way this movie got created was that somebody sat down with a legal pad and scribbled “rich people in space, poor people on Earth” at the top, and then maybe got up to go use the bathroom or something, and while he was gone somebody turned those eight words into the entire movie. 😕

Say what you will, but SyFy’s got writing ridiculous movies down to a science!  😕

Dream Journal : Coughing Asteroids

You ever have one of those dreams that tries to interpret senses that your body is actually experiencing at that time in real life???

So I’m still sick, albeit finally getting better. But last night I hit a point where I was coughing pretty bad in my sleep, eventually to the point where it woke me up.

But before it got to that point, I was a starfighter pilot! I wasn’t the last oneper se, but apparently on this mission I was racing through an asteroid field that was a little strange.

In fact, the asteroids themselves were coughing … they didn’t have silly mouths or faces, mind you, but were simply making a noise that distinctly resembled human coughing … much like the actual coughing that I was doing in real life, unknown to my subconscious self!

This story doesn’t really have much more than that – I just thought that it was kind of interesting because it happens from time to time when maybe the TV will be on in the background or there will be a really bad storm outside, and subconsciously my body still senses those things and somehow works them into my dreams. Kinda strange, kinda neat… 😉

It seems that Legoland Florida just recently took delivery of the last of the models for its new Star Wars section in Miniland – over 2,000 models, 1.5 million bricks!!!

I honestly would’ve expected this to be a fan parody, but I guess it’s actually a project that Lucasfilm is working on for 2013. It kinda reminds me of the first parody that the Family Guy folks did a few years ago, before parts 2 and 3 that ended up being terrible in comparison!

Hopefully this won’t be another example of all the best bits being in the trailer, but so far it was pretty funny to me … I especially liked the “origin” Admiral Ackbar’s quote…  😉

one last song for Ray Bradbury…

So science fiction maverick Ray Bradbury died yesterday at the age of 91 years old.

I didn’t know his works as well as I probably should, but Dandelion Wine was a hand-me-down from my Dad that I rather enjoyed.

Isn’t it a little sad that sometimes we don’t look back to revisit a legend’s catalog until they die? Nonetheless, it makes me feel like picking up a few of his titles to peruse over the summer – my Dad was always a huge fan, so I’m sure he can make some great recommendations.

Anyways, that having been said, this is the best tribute to Ray Bradbury that I could find. It’s a little “crude,” but also hilarious, and besides, being a somewhat sheltered writer myself, I’d like to think that just about any man would be able to appreciate knowing that an anthem such as this was composed in their honor…

* Just got home…now watching fireworks out my office window as I write up a review for Star Wars – Episode 3…hoping that my neighbors don’t catch their building on fire and, if they do, that it doesn’t spread over to my own… * 😛

Happy 4th of July!!!

* watching Tremors 4 on the Sci-Fi channel *

Just how many of these damn worm movies did they make, anyways?!
